Alfonso Ribeiro Replacing Tom Bergeron as ‘America’s Funniest Videos’ Host
Alfonso Ribeiro is seeing a career resurgence. The actor has gone from winning Dancing With the Stars Season 19 to taking over the surprisingly still-popular America’s Funniest Home Videos. He’ll be replacing Dancing With the Stars host Tom Bergeron as the emcee of the video clip show.
The series, which will enter its 26th season next year, compiles some of the funniest clips submitted by viewers from around the country. The respective finalists are flown in for a chance to compete for $10,000, and a later prize of $100,000, after which all the $100,000 prize winners return to duke it out for a grand prize vacation package. On the one hand, a show like this seems redundant in an age where funny videos are right at our finger tips as long as we have a smart phone or an internet connection. On the other hand, the show still performs well for ABC in the ratings, and it helps strengthen the family brand of early Sunday nights, pairing with Once Upon A Time. Plus, it’s probably not that expensive to make, so it isn’t that shocking that ABC is continuing to keep it around.
“After receiving hundreds of inquiries, stacks of video submissions, and a very close audition race, one smile, one funny and sincere delivery became our standout favorite — Alfonso Ribeiro,” EP Vin Di Bona said in a statement. And the news was confirmed on the Dancing With the Stars 20 finale last night.
I think Ribeiro is a great choice to host, and I think he’ll do a fine job in the role. I don’t know what he’ll mean to the ratings, but this is a show with an audience, and I’m not entirely convinced that the amount of viewers it draws has anything to do with the host. So I could easily see this show carrying on beyond Season 26.
But what do you think of Alfonso Ribeiro as AFV host? Good call or would someone else have been better? Sound off in the comments!
