Alberto Del Rio Reveals Reason For WWE Wellness Policy Failure
Alberto Del Rio and WWE have parted ways, but the former world champion is speaking out against the company.
In an interview with Mas Lucha in Mexico, Del Rio revealed the substance that caused his WWE Wellness Policy test failure. As it turns out, he was popped for something for which he had a valid doctor’s prescription. Granted, it could be Del Rio attempting to cover his ass, but I believe him. Check out Del Rio’s interview below:
Interviewer: WWE published an announcement that you were suspended for 30 days over a wellness violation. Was this a determining factor in your decision?
Alberto Del Rio: Of course it was. It was that and along with many more tings that made me not want to be there. But there are rules. Their wellness program is one of their rules. I can’t call it absurd because when you work for them, you sign a contract. You know that you are subject to their terms. I don’t think it’s fair because there is a big difference in people using medication to obtain better… (he wants to say performance enhancing) physical performance. But when it is like in my case, a testosterone replacement, where I am a 40 year old man and it is a medical matter that I have proof of from my doctors. I don’t think it is something fair. But I come back to the same thing. It’s their wellness policy and you have to abide to it. So yeah that was part of it, but not all of it. There were many reasons. But it did help me to make the decision to say, “Goodbye, see you later. I don’t want to be in this company.” And as I’m leaving in two years, that was my last time with this company. Now all that’s left is to do what’s here for me in Mexico.
Del Rio’s reasoning makes sense to me, especially since Adam Rose was suspended earlier this year for a substance for which he claimed to have a valid doctor’s prescription, even going as far as to have his doctor write him a note. Sure, it’s difficult to tell who’s being truthful and who’s using the “I have a prescription!” excuse, but this happens an awful lot for everyone to be lying about it. Hell, Eva Marie was recently suspended for testing positive for a substance despite having a valid prescription. Apparently, she simply forgot to fill out the proper paperwork to let WWE know about it. So I guess WWE’s policy is that it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to Wellness violations, hence the suspensions. Still, I could see how this might be a dealbreaker for Del Rio, who was already looking for reasons to get the hell out. I hope he manages to find success in Mexico, and maybe returns for another season of Lucha Underground. He’s a great talent virtually everywhere he goes that isn’t WWE.
But what do you think of Alberto Del Rio’s reason for his drug test failure? Sound off in the comments!
