AJ Styles vs. Shane McMahon Rumored for WWE Wrestlemania 33

The latest rumor for WWE Wrestlemania 33 is perhaps the strangest yet: AJ Styles vs. Shane McMahon is reportedly being discussed as a marquee match for the show.

WrestleChat claims that their sources are telling them a Styles/McMahon match is in the cards. Presumably, the feud would begin after Styles loses the WWE title to John Cena, since they aren’t going to put Shane-O-Mac in a title match at Wrestlemania. Granted, there’s no guarantee Styles will drop the title to Cena at the Royal Rumble, as WWE could easily decide to hold off on the title change another month until the next pay-per-view. They could even do a title match on free TV to pop a rating. Either way, if Styles is facing McMahon at Wrestlemania, expect AJ drop the title beforehand.

Of course, this is a big departure from the original plans for Shane on this year’s show, as the Smackdown Commissioner was originally scheduled to face Brock Lesnar following their angle in the closing moments of the Summerslam main event last year. But that was thrown out the window once Bill Goldberg signed on to return to the company. However, top brass still wanted to find a spot for Shane on the Wrestlemania card since his match against The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 32 seriously spiked ticket sales once it was announced. Naturally, the question is how good an idea this is for Shane’s long-term well-being, considering he recently got knocked out from a Roman Reigns spear during the interpromotional elimination match at Survivor Series, in what was a pretty scary moment. Sure, Shane doesn’t exactly keep a regular in-ring schedule, so injuries don’t get the chance to pile up. But if ticket sales aren’t what they should be for certain events, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Shane used a bit more often as a special in-ring attraction. And considering he just turned 47, and he’s not an active performer, he takes on considerably greater risk than someone in constant ring shape.

With that said, I do think AJ vs. Shane could be a great feud, if booked properly. AJ is one of WWE’s best heels, and Shane has that intrinsic likability that makes people want to root for him. Granted, it’d probably be better if Shane nominated a representative to fight Styles for him, just so more regular performers could get singles matches on the Wrestlemania card rather than being bumped for another part-timer. But they could probably come up with worse things for AJ to do at Wrestlemania.
