Afeni Shakur, Mother of Tupac Shakur, Dead at 69
Afeni Shakur, mother of late hip hop icon Tupac Shakur, has passed away at age 69.
Shakur’s death was confirmed by the Marin County sheriff’s department. While the official cause of death has not been revealed, reports state she may have suffered a possible cardiac arrest at her home in Sausalito, California on Monday night. Shakur was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead some time before 10:30 p.m.
Born Alice Faye Williams, Shakur changed her name after joining the Black Panther movement in the 1960s. She and several party members were arrested in 1969 and charged with conspiracy to bomb multiple New York City landmarks. The case, called the Panther 21, made headlines at the time, and lasted for two years. Ultimately, Sakur was acquitted of all charges and released in May of 1971 — just one month before Tupac’s birth.
Following Tupac’s tragic shooting death in 1996, Afeni Shakur became involved in philanthropic endeavors such as the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, a program that offers opportunities in the performing arts for Georgia-based youths.
Our thoughts are with Shakur’s family and friends at this trying time.
