ABC Renews ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’, ‘Nashville’, Shonda Rhimes Shows, More

ABC has announced its schedule for the 2015-2016 season, and that includes a mixture of surprises and foregone conclusions.

First and foremost, ABC has renewed Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for Season 3, Once Upon A Time for Season 5, Nashville for Season 4, and Marvel’s Agent Carter for Season 2, and Castle for Season 8, despite the uncertain status of lead star Stana Katic. I would expect ABC to throw a ton of money at her to stay, provided Castle is important enough to Monday nights to warrant the expenditure. Maybe Dancing With the Stars could carry the night, but who even knows, at this point?

But that’s not all, as ABC has renewed all three Shonda Rhimes dramas: Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder. She’ll also have a new drama on the schedule, as her freshman series The Catch has been picked up to series, with The Killing star Mireille Enos.

In addition, ABC has renewed freshman dramas American Crime and Secrets and Lies for second seasons. I’m not that big on American Crime, but Secrets and Lies is exactly the kind of shamelessly twisty TV I’ve come to adore, even as I recognize how manipulative it’s being. It’s just too addictive, and I’m not going to pretend that I’m not hooked!

In the comedy category, ABC has renewed Modern Family, The Middle, Blackish, Fresh Off the Boat and, in a gloriously welcome surprise, fairy tale musical Galavant. Seriously, I didn’t even know how badly I wanted it back until I saw it was renewed.

As for reality shows, ABC is bringing back The Bachelor, Dancing With the Stars, Shark Tank, Beyond the Tank, 20/20 and America’s Funniest Home Videos.

What do you think of the renewals? Sound off in the comments!
