2016 Writers Guild Nominations Announced: ‘The Martian’, ‘Straight Outta Compton’, Amy Schumer

The 2016 Writers Guild Award nominations are in, and it’s a fittingly impressive lineup. We have box office hits such as The Martian, Straight Outta Compton, and Trainwreck, which scored a nod for writer Amy Schumer. We also have critical darlings that have swept awards season, such as Spotlight, Carol and Bridge of Spies. All in all, this is a fantastic list of finalists for the big prize.

These awards are a tremendous honor in their own right, but they also serve a significant function in helping predict the Oscars. The stats basically speak for themselves, as 60% of films (so three out of the five) from the Original Screenplay category go on to a corresponding Oscar nomination, whereas that number jumps to 71% for Adapted Screenplays (which is between three and four of the five nominated films). Meanwhile, 81% of Writers Guild Award nominees go on to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. In short, it’s easy to see why these nominations are crucial for their respective films, in addition to, once again, simply being a wonderful honor in themselves.

Best Original Screenplay
Bridge of Spies
Straight Outta Compton

Best Adapted Screenplay
The Big Short
The Martian
Steve Jobs

These are some pretty solid nominations, although I wish Brooklyn had made the cut over, say, Steve Jobs (a great film but merely anecdotal, at best, as an adaptation of Walter Isaacson’s Jobs biography). I also wish Room had been nominated, but I can’t think of which other film I’d have booted from Adapted Screenplay to accommodate it. This is just a really strong category this year. Hell, this is a strong group of nominees overall, for my money. Should make for an interesting race.
