2016 Directors Guild Award Film Nominations: ‘Mad Max’, ‘The Martian’, ‘The Revenant’, ‘Spotlight’
The nominations have been announced for the 2016 Directors Guild Awards honoring achievements in directing. Needless to say, the nominees aren’t exactly what you’d call surprising. But this year, that’s a good thing, as the final five directors represent some of the most outstanding work of the year.
Alejandro G, Iñárritu strengthened his Oscar resume for The Revenant with a nomination here, while Tom McCarthy bounced back from the Golden Globes shutout for his film, Spotlight. Meanwhile, Adam McKay earned his first DGA nomination for The Big Short, while blockbuster directors George Miller and Ridley Scott earned nominations for Mad Max: Fury Road and The Martian, respectively. In addition to the traditional DGA nominations, the guild has created a new category this year recognizing first-time directors. Interestingly, a director need not even be a member of the DGA to earn the nomination. All in all, this is an outstanding list of finalists, and while there are some glaring omissions (such as Todd Haynes for Carol and previous champ Tom Hooper for The Danish Girl), it’s hard to be upset with this group.
The winners for the 2016 DGA Awards will be announced on February 6th. Until then, check out the full nominations for the 2016 Directors Guild Awards below:
