2016 ACE Eddie Awards Nominations: ‘Star Wars’, ‘Mad Max’, ‘The Martian’, More

The nominees are in for the American Cinema Editor’s 66th annual ACE Eddie Awards, and they include Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Big Short, The Martian, The Revenant and Sicario, just to name a few. Although the winners will not be announced until Jan. 29 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, buzz is already surrounding the nominees: in nine of the past 12 years, the winner of the Eddie for best edited dramatic feature has gone on to win the Oscar for film editing. Considering that the film editing Oscar has been a key nomination in a film’s Best Picture hopes, the Eddie has grown in stature and importance over the years. Of course, Birdman won Best Picture without an editing nomination last year, becoming only the ninth film to do so, and the first in over 30 years. But I think part of it is that we’re in an age in which statistics mean less than they ever have. If nothing else, the Eddie is a window into which films are likely to be nominated for Best Film Editing, which certainly makes an Oscar prognosticator’s job a little easier.

But I digress.

Disney/Pixar are double nominees in the Best Edited Animated Feature Film category, scoring nods for Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur. Meanwhile, Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) is a battle between blockbusters and critical favorites, as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Martian, and Mad Max: Fury Road do battle alongside The Revenant and Sicario. The comedy category tells a similar story of the popular vs. the critically-acclaimed, as Ant-Man and Trainwreck compete alongside The Big Short, Joy, and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. All in all, it’s a great lineup of nominees for one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry.
