2015 Billboard Music Awards – Live Blog

I’m live blogging the 2015 Billboard Music Awards tonight! Join me in the comments.

Billboard Music Awards

The awards opens with the world premiere of Taylor Swift’s music video for “Bad Blood.”
– WOW. I know I haven’t been hip for a while but Kendrick Lamar is the remix for this!? This is everything. I’ve been wanting to hear her on a hip-hop track. This video is an action-packed office/winter thriller form with cameos from stars from Hayley Williams to Zendaya to Selena Gomez. Selena is the leader of the opposing army! This was really great work. Shout outs to Taylor!

Van Halen performs next with “Pamama”

Lily Alridge and Charlie XCX present “Top Duo or Group”
– Nominees are 5 Second of Summer, Florida Georgia Line, Magic!, Maroon 5, and One Direction. I’m going with One Direction or Maroon 5, with edge to Maroon 5.
– I was wrong as One Direction wins!

Tracee Ellis Ross and Laverne Cox present “Top Billboard 200 Album”
– Maroon 5, Pentatonix, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Taylor Swift are the nominees. I’m going with Taylor Swift.
– I’m correct this time as the winner is Swift and 1989!

Fall Out Boy performs “Uma Thurman” with Wiz Khalifa

The stars of ABC’s The Bachelorette present Nick Jonas performing “Jealous”
– After the pop rock mishap of Nick Jonas & The Administration, it is crazy how the youngest Jonas is a star in his own right now.

Next, Meaghan Trainor and John Legend perfrom “Like I’m Gonna Lose You.”
– I haven’t heard the actual audio of this song, but based upon this I think this may be my favorite song by her.

Idina Menzel introduces Mariah Carey, who is doing to the Billboard stage for the first time in 17 years.
– We get a rundown of all her accolades and chart runs before Mariah performs “Vision of Love” before going into her new #1’s single “Infinity.”
– Mariah’s goal for this performance was clearly to redeem herself. Considering how trash her past few appearances have been, I’ll give her a pass for this one although some notes were all over.

Top Rap song is presented.
– Nominees are: Iggy Azaela – Fancy, Black Widow, Big Sean – IDFWU, Bobby Shmurda – Hot Boy, Nicki Minaj -Anaconda. It will be an Iggy song.
– Told you. It’s “Fancy.”

As a tribute to Paul Walker, Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth perform “See You Again.”
– I do not like this song because it puts me in my feelings. So I’ll just leave it at that.

Celine Dion presents Top Male Artist. Nominees are Drake, Pharrell, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, and Justin Timberlake.
– Definitely going to Ed or Sam. I’m going to say Sam.
– And I’m right again! It’s Sam Smith

Taraji P. Henson introduces her Empire cast members Yazz the Greatest and Jussie Smollett for Empire hits featuring Estelle.
– Jussie and Estelle perform “Conqueror” first. Jussie is a bit sheep-sounding on his high notes. That is an improvement point that I’m sure will happen once he gets more experience. SN: I’m sure this is the most publicity Estelle has gotten in years.
– Yazz comes out to join Jussie on “You’re So Beautiful,” the breakout Empire hit.

Hozier performs “Take Me to Church” next

One Direction presents “Top Radio Song.”
– Nominees are All of Me, Magic, Am I Wrong, Stay With Me and Happy. It goes to “All of Me” by John Legend.

Next, a tribute to B.B. King is presented.

Little Big Down performs “Girl Crush.”
– I’m not a big country music enthusiast but this sounds like they took this melody from a gospel folk song. I’m sure of it.
– Actually it even sounds a little like Demi Lovato’s “Lightweight” as I hear it more.

Ellen Pompeo presents Top Female Artist. Nominees are Iggy Azalea, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Meghan Trainor. Either Taylor or Meghan.
– It goes to Taylor!

Top Touring Artist Nominees: Lady Gaga, One Direction, Katy Perry, The Rolling Stone, and Justin Timberlake.
– It goes to…One Direction!

Jennifer Lopez presents Pitbull and Chris Brown performing “Fun.”
– Wish this would have been a normal song with just Chris Brown because Pitbull’s music is not where it’s at.

Zendaya presents Ed Sheeran performing “Bloodstream.”

50 Cent and Rita Ora present Top Hot 100 Song, which is Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass!”

Now..the moment we’ve been waiting for. Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea perform “Pretty Girls.”
-Regardless of her lip-synching or not, BRITNEY DID THAT! This is the most aware, present, and happy she has been in a performance in a while and I’m here for it. Great job, Brit! SN: Not sure why Iggy lip-synched.

Fifth Harmony (YES!!) presents Nicki Minaj and David Guetta performing “Hey Mama” and “The Night Is Still Young.”
– Eh. Not really here for this because I just knew she would do a pop song on an album which showcased her as a hip-hop heavyweight. We needed her to perform “Only” or “Truffle Butter.” We didn’t need both EDM songs, at least ONE hip-hop song. Alas… Nicki still showed out as usual. So kudos!

The Kia “One to Watch” performer is Tori Kelly, performing an acoustic version of “Nobody Love”
– YES TORI! She murked that song. Glad she’s getting this exposure.

The Simple Minds perform “Don’t You Forget About Me.”

Kelly Clarkson debuts her new single, “Invincible.”

The award for Top Country Artist goes to Florida Georgia Line.

Performing “Stand By Me” as a tribute to Ben E. King are Imagine Dragons!

Top artist award goes to Taylor Swift!

Kendall and Kylie Jenner present Kanye West who performs “All Day.” For some reason he also performed “Black Skinhead.”

Thanks for everyone who followed along! See y’all next time!
