United States Wins Women’s Team Gymnastics Gold – London 2012 Olympics – Medal Results

Russia, China and Romania all challenged at different points in the competition, but the “Fab Five” were like a team possessed.  Team USA lead from start to finish to win gold in the Women’s Team Gymnastics event at the London 2012 Olympics.

Coming into today’s Team All Around competition, many questioned whether American star Jordyn Wieber would have the mental fortitude to compete after the disappointment of missing out on the Individual All Around due to the two per country rule.  Performing like a woman on a mission, Jordyn showed the world just how silly that “two per” rule is and contributed stunning performances on the vault and the floor exercise to the USA Team’s victory.

Team USA got things off to a phenomenal start on the vault with near perfect performances by Gabby, McKayla and Jordan.  McKayla’s vault in particular was a thing of beauty.  If she can repeat that performance in the event finals, she should be a lock for another gold medal.

The United states continued to rock out near perfect routines on every apparatus, with significant contributions from specialist Kyla Ross on Uneven Bars and Balance Beam.  Gabby Douglas turned in world class routines on all four events, while Aly Raisman was spectacular on Balance Beam and Floor exercise, where she closed out the competition.

China challenged for the gold early on, but mistakes on balance beam knocked them out early.  Russia looked like the team with the best chance to dethrone the U.S. going into the final rotation, but a big mistake on their final floor routine crushed their hopes of winning gold.

This was one of the most thrilling gymnastics competitions I have ever witnessed and one of the best United States teams in the history of the sport.  I am so proud of our girls today!  There were also some pretty spectacular routines from China, Russia, Romania and Great Britain.  While there were some mistakes, overall it was a very impressive performance by all the finalists.  Great job ladies!
