UFC Star Nick Diaz Suspended for Five Years Over Failed Drug Test
It’s looking like the end of the road for one of the biggest stars in MMA.
UFC athlete Nick Diaz has received a 5-year suspension for failing a drug test, in addition to a $150,000 fine from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. At age 31, a five-year ban is pretty much a retirement sentence to a fighter like Diaz, considering how difficult it will be for him to make a major comeback at age 36. Granted, it’s not exactly impossible, but it’s hard to imagine he’d be at his peak, considering his physical prime will have arguably passed him by. Of course, some would argue that a five-year ban for any drug test failure would represent a cruel and unusual abuse of power by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. If nothing else, it’s likely this is what Diaz’s attorney will argue.
This isn’t exactly the first time Diaz has failed a drug test this year. He reportedly tested positive for marijuana for his fight against Anderson Silva at UFC 183. That said, it’s not necessarily over for Diaz, as his attorney is filing an appeal as we speak. I suppose we’ll see how it all pans out from here, but it’s not looking good for Diaz.
Then again, not every MMA fighter can be on top of the world like, say, Ronda Rousey. Seriously, who gets a llama named after them?
