Top 25 Performances of 2012 – New Year’s Countdown – #17
#17 is Nicholas David with “What’s Going On”! Choosing a performance for Nicholas was difficult, mainly because he was consistently pretty great throughout the season. While he sometimes stumbled with odd choices hurled his way by coach Cee-Lo, a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” was the perfect reflection of Nicholas as a heartfelt artist and a special kind of vocalist. It takes a certain kind of performer to be able to cover a song like that and do it apt justice. We’ve heard “What’s Going On” done a few times on shows like this before, but this was the most believable version I can remember.
Funny thing, how Nicholas’ warm vocal tone reflected his warm and inviting personality on The Voice. In the midst of a sea of countless drummed-up sob stories, it was a breath of fresh air to learn of his truly positive turn from alcohol addiction to family, all in the name of good music. Here’s to hoping Nicholas pours his heart and soul into his first album post-Voice as he consistently did during his on-show performances, laying down the relatable, homey vibe we’ve come to love in digital form.
