Top 25 Performances of 2012 – New Year’s Countdown – #15
#15 is Terry McDermott with “I Want to Know What Love Is”! The primary thing I like about Terry is that he showed up and he sang. That’s it. This is The Voice. I realize to some, Terry came off more so as a lead singer in a cover band, but truth be told, the guy has an incredible voice. I mean, it took him all the way to second place during a season of some seriously stiff competition.
Let’s talk about Terry’s hair for a moment. He always seemed to be a generally quiet fellow. Mostly, I saw him as a family man who set out to do what he had to do. Still, a loud personality isn’t much required when you have a hairdo like that to liven things up for you. I remember his first audition. I remember thinking, “wow, that’s some haircut! Wow, he’s a good singer!” In that order.
Honestly, I’m just kidding around because I don’t have too much to say. Terry wasn’t much of a colorful character, but I liked him well enough. Obviously, America liked him even more. Taking commercial viability out of the equation, he chose to audition for The Voice as opposed to The X Factor. Thus, all I could hope for was that he would deliver strong vocals, and that he did. Here’s to hoping that Terry finds his way in mainstream music because it would be a shame if his killer crystalline voice went to waste!
