Nick Roman here. Let’s get this bloodbath underway!
8:01 PM: Could they possibly have gotten a more generic voiceover announcer to intro this thing?
8:04 PM: I should probably just quit Earth right now, because I actually think Khloe looks damn fine in that dress. In other “I’m totally straight, no really” news: Demi needs to wear her hair like that forever.
YOUNG ADULTS UP FIRST
8:08 PM: We get some insight, through video packages, of the backstage antics surrounding each act’s performance. Paige and Jennel are stoked after their performances, while CeCe shows a little bit of her old CeCe Thunder in declaring that if she ends up in the bottom 2, she’s going to prove to the judges what it means to be a vocalist. Bit of a big boast, but I’m still a huge fan, even if her blonde makeover is profoundly ill-advised. Oh, and Willie is nervous after getting critiques from the judges.
8:12 PM: Time for Demi’s decisions:
JENNEL GARCIA is the first act through to next week!
PAIGE THOMAS is the second act through to next week!
It’s CeCe vs. Willie in the sing-off!
Backstage, Jennel is upset that her “two best friends” have to sing for their lives. Did she forget about Jillian already? This girl goes through best friends like Taylor Swift goes through boyfriends.
8:14 PM: Cece is up first, singing “Out Here On My Own” by Irene Cara.
It’s shaky as hell in the early going, but man ALIVE, did she bring it towards the end! Seriously, where the hell has she been hiding THAT? CeCe is in tears, Demi is in tears, and it has all the feeling of a big moment.
LA doesn’t know what Willie is going to sing, but he believes CeCe just saved herself with that song. Britney continues with the ongoing theme of mispronunciation by stating that she felt CeCe had an identity crisis last night, coming across like “Keesha.” Simon thinks this is the performance she should have given last night, instead of faffing about onstage in clown makeup.
Willie really going to have to bring it, since CeCe pretty much threw down the gauntlet with the tail-end of that performance.
8:21 PM: Willie Jones is up next!
He sings the classic standard, “You Don’t Know Me”. The crowd doesn’t seem to want to shut up and listen to the song. Do people really find him that hot? If so, I might have to rethink my stand on the fade top hairstyle.
LA says that Willie just made it hard for Demi, while Britney isn’t sure where Willie fits in the competition. Simon muses that he kind of wishes he were mentoring Willie, to help him in his development.
DECISION TIME: Demi doesn’t stall with niceties. WILLIE JONES IS ELIMINATED FROM THE X FACTOR
THE OVERS ARE UP NEXT!
8:32 PM: The hilarious train of mispronunciations continues, with Khloe pronouncing it “Vino Uh-Lone.”
We get backstage video packages of the aftermath of each performance. David Correy seems pumped by the feedback. Vino does nothing to endear himself to me, getting pissed off at the lousy critique he got. Tate wants to go home and see his kids, but he’s not ready for his journey to end. Jason is surprised that Simon hated his performance, since he thought his performance was fantastic. He doesn’t know what he’s going to do if he’s sent home.
It’s time for LA to make his decision!
VINO ALLAN ADVANCES TO TOP 12!
TATE STEVENS ADVANCES TO TOP 12!
ARE YOU SERIOUS?!
It’s David Correy vs. Jason Brock in the sing-off, and I’m MAD AS HELL.
David Correy is up first!
He sings a slowed-down version of “Since U Been Gone,” and I know that in my list I called his performance of “Domino” the performance of the season. This blows that performance out of the water. David is already in tears.
Britney is the only judge who seemed to have liked it, as Demi didn’t like the arrangement or his shouty vocal, and Simon thought it was too theatrical (…..I don’t even…).
Here comes Jason Brock!
He’s singing “One Moment In Time,” which has all those big notes that serve Jason’s voice so well. He’s straining, and is far shoutier than David, but it’s clear that he wants it.
The judges love it, except for Simon, who says it’s like judging two horses who are both losing the race, adding that he doesn’t think either man can win, but also adds that Jason’s performance tonight is a million times better than his work last night.
DECISION TIME: DAVID CORREY IS ELIMINATED FROM THE X FACTOR
LA Reid is a joke. Enjoy being this year’s Paula.
THE TEENS ARE UP NEXT
9:06 PM: With David eliminated, I guess no one is safe now. Well, except Emblem3. They aren’t going anywhere. We get the backstage reactions, and Arin is kind of pompous in his reaction to Demi’s judging, saying her critique of his dancing is “whatever”, and maybe he’ll do a special dance number for her next week. Diamond is bubbly, and high off of the rush of performing, thrilled with the comments she received from the judges. Beatrice passes the buck on her tuning issues, claiming that it wasn’t her fault. And Carly is nervous after hearing what the judges had to say, even though Simon was adamant that it would be a crime if she were to leave the competition.
It’s decision time for Britney.
BEATRICE MILLER ADVANCES TO THE TOP 12!
CARLY ROSE IS THROUGH TO THE TOP 12!
It’s Diamond White vs. Arin Ray in the sing-off!
Backstage, Beatrice is thrilled, but can’t believe Carly wasn’t called first. Both girls are obviously stoked. Adorable.
ARIN RAY IS UP FIRST
He sings “I Look To You,” marking the second Whitney Houston song performed by a contestant in the bottom 2 so far tonight, after Jason Brock’s performance. The vocal is patchy, and he comes across as though he’s trying to do his best Marcus Canty impression. But the kid has passion. The judges all loved it, and agree that it would be a huge mistake for him to leave the competition. How that earned more raves than David Correy’s knockout vocal, I’ll never know.
9:20 PM: DIAMOND WHITE IS UP NEXT
She’s singing Elton John’s “Sorry Seems To Be the Hardest Word.” The judges all love it, with LA saying that no matter what, Diamond has a huge future in this business, and Simon saying that Diamond changed his mind about who had to go home, believing that neither her nor Arin should be in this position.
DIAMOND WHITE IS ELIMINATED FROM THE X FACTOR
Both Diamond and Arin are shocked by the decision, though it wears off quickly, and Diamond thanks Britney for the opportunity, marveling at how far she got into the competition. And here I thought the teens would be the most likely to break out crying.
THE GROUPS ARE UP NEXT
9:30 PM: Backstage footage. Sister C still somehow manage to come off poorly, even while shedding tears over the judges’ harsh critiques. Demi and LA believe the act will be in trouble. Lyric145 lets the judges’ criticism roll off their backs, which immediately makes them endearing. They’re confident and optimistic despite the reviews they received. As for 1432, Demi’s critiques lead to she and Simon arguing backstage and demanding that Demi apologize. Demi tries to offer advice to the girls, but Simon cuts her off. The girls are worried because they don’t want their run to end, saying that they really are like sisters now. Emblem3, meanwhile, is over-the-moon with how their performance went. Wesley & Keaton’s dad is super proud, and Simon is convinced that the boys can win the whole thing.
DECISION TIME FOR SIMON!
EMBLEM3 ADVANCES TO THE TOP 12
LYRIC145 ADVANCES TO THE TOP 12
The sing-off will be 1432 vs. Sister C! The singers who are like sisters vs. the singers who actually are sisters!
SISTER C IS UP FIRST
They bring their best Miley Cyrus melodies, singing “When I Look At You.” The harmonies are lovely, but the individual verses are really nasally. But I’m going to refrain from saying anything, since the acts I critique are the ones that stay, apparently. LA thought they got the song choice right, and compliments “middle C” for her soul. Britney is pleasantly surprised, feeling that they really want this, and that they have the “Eye of the Tiger.” Demi thinks their voices sound phenomenal every time they get onstage, and feels it would be an injustice if they left the competition, drawing mixed, hushed reactions from the crowd.
1432 IS UP NEXT
They sing Demi’s own “Skyscraper,” and it’s already better than anything any of the groups did last night. The harmonies are transcendent. The girls hug after the performance. LA felt the girls really brought it, while Britney loved it too. Demi, interestingly, declared that they did it better than the song’s original singer, in a cute bit (punctuated by LA calling back to last season, when he didn’t know who the original singer was).
DECISION TIME FOR SIMON
After a commercial break’s worth of deliberation, plus an extra minute or two of Simon wanting to say the name of the act he wants to save instead of the act he’s eliminating (knowing full well that a judge must specify the name of the act he wants to send home, given that HE MADE THESE RULES HIMSELF)…
SISTER C IS ELIMINATED FROM THE X FACTOR
In a twist, Simon announces that he can’t stand the name 1432, and decides that they’re going to leave it up to the audience to come up with a new name for the group.
GET TO BRAINSTORMING!
That’s all for me though. I’ve had a hell of a time chilling (and flipping out) here with you all. Thanks for sticking with Rickey.org, and come back throughout the night for footage of the performances! Have a safe night, guys!
