The X Factor Australia 2015: Top 5 Perform In Live Quarterfinals (VIDEO)
The quarterfinals are here for The X Factor Australia 2015, as the Top 5 took the stage for Mentors’ Choice week.
All in all, it was a solid show, albeit fairly unspectacular. Nobody did a bad job, in my opinion, but I didn’t feel blown away either. Perhaps part of it is the loss of Natalie Conway, who was usually good for a blowaway performance every week (well, ignoring the Whitney Houston performance). But there was just a certain lifelessness to tonight’s show that was jarring. For instance, Cyrus should have had the moment of the season with “Love Me Like You Do”. They even gave him the tools to accomplish this, sitting him high up onstage with a grand piano. And yet…they saddle him with the same arrangement as the original? It led to an awkward performance that did little to display the star quality Cyrus clearly has. By the same token, Big T did a fine job with “All of Me”, but it was nothing unexpected. I knew exactly what that performance would sound like before even one note was uttered. Ditto Mahalia’s performance, which kind of fell apart towards the end. Ultimately, Louise and Jess & Matt ended up being my favorites, even while I can acknowledge that Jess & Matt’s arrangement of “You’re the One That I Want” was completely expected. I mean, this was a good show, but it was just kind of dull for a Top 5 performance show, in my opinion.
But what do you think of The X Factor Australia 2015 Top 5? Watch all the performances below:
THE X FACTOR AUSTRALIA 2015: TOP 5 – MENTORS’ CHOICE WEEK
CYRUS VILLANUEVA, “LOVE ME LIKE YOU DO”
MAHALIA SIMPSON, “I TRY”
JESS & MATT, “YOU’RE THE ONE THAT I WANT”
BIG T, “ALL OF ME”
LOUISE ADAMS, “I PUT A SPELL ON YOU”
Thoughts: Picking the Bottom 2 is going to be rough this week since no one really stood out, but no one really flopped either. In situations such as these, the safe bet is usually the way to go, so I’m going to say Mahalia and Jess & Matt duke it out for a spot in the semifinals, since they’re the only two in the Top 5 who’ve actually been in the Bottom 2 before. Granted, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that we see Cyrus, Louise or Big T make their first appearance in the Bottom 2, considering the surprise Bottom 2 appearances for Dean Ray and Reigan Derry late last season. But I wouldn’t exactly count on Cyrus, Louise or Big T to land in the Bottom 2, given their respective fan bases and overall popularity.
