The Vampire Diaries – Season 4 Episode 18 – Recap – American Gothic
“American Gothic” delivered on many levels tonight and I was quite satisfied even with the dark ending.
There was much anticipation for this episode since it featured an unexpected team up: Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Rebekah (Claire Holt). We haven’t seen their characters in this dynamic before so it was quite entertaining to see. Furthermore, they were after Katherine who had the cure which all of the characters in The Vampire Diaries are now hell-bent on getting. Three strong characters squabbling over a vial of purple liquid made for some witty dialogue and twists. My favorite from Katherine to Rebekah: “Are you really that dumb or just naturally blonde?” Zing!
Katherine had hooked up with Elijah (Daniel Gillies) to broker a deal with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) (to stop him from going after her for all the bad things she’s done in the past). However, this plan hit a snag as Elena and Rebekah find her. Elena poses as Katherine to meet at first with a mystery “em” who turns out to be Elijah, now Katherine’s lover. Elijah knows immediately that Elena’s not Katherine. Elena reveals that she had turned off her humanity because Katherine had killed Jeremy – which made Elijah doubt Katherine’s love for him.
Meanwhile, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) finally catch up to Rebekah and Katherine. Stefan follows Elena to talk to Elijah, while Katherine leads Rebekah and Damon to her house for the cure. (If only it was that easy!)
At her house, Katherine tries to weasel her way out that she doesn’t have the cure anymore. She ends up shoving Damon’s face in a fishtank full of verbane. She then throws the cure at Rebekah, and then makes her escape.
Stefan arrives at the house. Rebekah, now with the cure, decides to take it! (Wow, she really was serious). Stefan accuses Damon of not being on his side after all for not stopping Rebekah (he wanted the cure for Elena). Later however, they discover that the cure was a fake.
While Elena and Elijah talk, Katherine arrives and snaps Elena’s neck. Elijah confronts her about her lies. Katherine insists that her feelings are real (yeah right!)
That evening, Katherine picks up the real cure from one of the people that she had compelled. (She basically compelled the entire town to like her). She gives the cure to Elijah to demonstrate that she’s being true. (It’s very dramatic, but I’m not buying any of it).
So now, Elijah has the cure. Wow. That’s a stunning turn of events actually.
Meanwhile, Klaus is back in Mystic Falls struggling to get the stake out of his back. Silas in the form of Caroline (Candice Accola) comes to torment him – Klaus is truly hurting! Later the real Caroline comes to really help. After some prodding, Caroline can’t find any pieces of the stake in Klaus’s back, but he still insists it’s there. Caroline then demands that Klaus stop hunting Tyler in exchange for her help. This ultimately angers Klaus to a point that he gets healed! It turns out that Silas was playing with his mind and there was no shard in his back after all. He was very grateful to Caroline for snapping him back to his senses. Caroline asks if he’s still going to target Tyler. Klaus responds: “I’m not exactly scouring the Earth for him.” Maybe that’s enough? Who knows.
Elijah walks back to his car where Rebekah asks that he give her the cure. She’s really tired of the 20 lifetimes she’s had and wants to live her life in her own terms. Then Klaus (whom she calls Nick) gives her a call. She hands the phone to Elijah, the new complication for their hunt for the cure. The brothers agree to talk it over back in Mystic Falls.
Finally, Damon and Stefan have a heart to heart talk about Elena. Damon apologizes for allowing Rebekah to take the cure (even if it turned out to be fake). Stefan reveals that he’s tired of living their lives over and over again in the same pattern (both of them fighting over the same girl, etc.) He says that he wants to cure Elena because he owes it to her – then he will move on to live a life on his own.
The brothers meet with Elena in a diner and talk to her again about the cure. “I don’t want the cure,” says Elena. “Let me be who I am.”
“This isn’t you,” says Stefan.
“It is now, and you have to accept it. If not there will be consequences.”
Stefan explains that he was in the exact same situation before, but the old Elena brought him back.
The waitress arrives, then Elena snaps her neck.
“Like I said, consequences. That’s one body you’re responsible for.”
Omigosh, she’s such a bitch.
Next episode is prom, which again will test my suspension of disbelief. However it’s three weeks away so I have enough time to prepare.
Did you like tonight’s episode? I thought it was good!
