The Undertaker Returning to WWE, New Wrestlemania Opponent Rumored

Although it was basically the worst kept secret in wrestling this week, WWE had yet to officially announce the return of The Undertaker for the 900th episode of Smackdown. That is, until now. But his return could have Wrestlemania implications.

In a press release on Thursday, WWE confirmed that The Undertaker will return to WWE for the 900th episode of Smackdown on November 15th in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Interestingly, this is also the go-home show for the Survivor Series, although this doesn’t necessarily mean Taker will be appearing on the pay-per-view. But then, who’s to say what he’ll be up to in the coming weeks?

Of course, while there is no confirmation just what Undertaker’s appearance will entail, there has been talk about who his Wrestlemania opponent will be. Recent rumors pegged Goldberg as a possible opponent, although that possibility was contingent upon Goldberg’s willingness to do another match after Survivor Series. The deal he signed with WWE was just for the one match with Brock Lesnar, although I suppose it’s possible to talk him into doing the Wrestlemania match with The Undertaker. Hell, anything is possible, considering the possibility of a Goldberg return would have sounded unlikely a year ago.

With that said, there are other rumors in the works for The Undertaker’s opponent.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez reported that Randy Orton and AJ Styles are two names being floated around for The Undertaker’s Wrestlemania opponent, with the company leaning towards choosing Orton. There’s a belief that Orton’s recent heel turn sets this up, as he joined the Wyatt Family, a faction with which The Undertaker has a history. And it makes sense as a match, especially when you take into account what a safe worker Orton is. If Undertaker wants to be protected in the ring and not go balls-to-the-wall, but still have a good match within those confines, then Orton is probably the best guy to pick. But I don’t know that it’s a match people would be clamoring to see, since they’ve already fought at Wrestlemania before. The Styles match would be fresher, or even a match with John Cena. Sure, Cena and The Undertaker have wrestled before, but never at Wrestlemania. Sure, the match loses a bit of its luster without the Streak, but I think it would still be a huge marquee match.

However, I feel WWE we’re probably getting Cena vs. AJ at Wrestlemania for the title, with Cena finally getting his win back and tying Ric Flair’s record. Otherwise, it makes no sense not to put Taker with either Cena or AJ. I’m really puzzled on what the plans are going to be for Wrestlemania, so speculation is basically all we’ve got. But I’d love to hear what you all think The Undertaker should do at Wrestlemania, or if he should even do Wrestlemania this year at all.
