JERSEY SHORE star MIKE ‘THE SITUATION’ SORRENTINO has opened up about his recent drug issues, revealing his addiction was so severe he could have died.
Fans of the hit MTV reality show are accustomed to the well-toned 30 year old’s partying ways, but what was not seen on TV was Sorrentino’s two-year battle with addition, which almost turned deadly.
His dependence on painkillers was so extreme that at the height of his drug use, Sorrentino was taking more than 15 doses of Oxycodone a day. Under the influence, he claims he barely recalls the moment he hit rock bottom.
In an interview with In Touch magazine, he confesses, “I was in a hotel room – probably in LA, Vegas or Miami – and I was watching a Brittany Murphy movie. I was probably high.”
It was then that the reality star came to his senses and remembers thinking, “Am I going to be that guy that was so awesome on the Jersey Shore and then… that’s it?”
Even with this realization, Sorrentino believed he could fix the problem himself. He admits, “I really thought I could fix it, that I could turn it around by myself.”
The intense symptoms of withdrawal even effected his work life, as he had to turn down a $40,000 appearance in Australia because he was too weak to get out of bed. However, at the time, he was not bothered by the fact that he was not showing up for his previous commitments.
Sorrentino exclaims, “I didn’t even care! When you’re dependent on a substance, it’s the only thing that matters.”
After that incident, he finally recognized that his addiction could be fatal, and decided to enter a rehab facility.
He explains, “On the plane home, they said, ‘Mike, you’ve got to handle this now,’ he says. “I knew that they were right, that if I didn’t fix the problem there’d be no Situation.”
