‘The Fosters’ Recasts Jake T. Austin With Disney Channel Star Noah Centineo
Jesus Foster is coming back to The Fosters! But he won’t be played by Jake T. Austin. The actor, who left The Fosters at the end of Season 2, and whose absence has been explained by a stint at an out-of-state boarding school on a wrestling scholarship, will be replaced in the second half of Season 3, which will air in 2016. But who will be the new Jesus Foster?
The role is going to Disney star Noah Centineo, who some fans might recognize from Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally. Although the show kept the fate of Jesus in the balance at the end of Season 2, leaving the possibility that he would be killed off in the car accident that served as the season finale’s cliffhanger, everyone came out of the accident alive, leaving the door open for the character’s return once he gets back from boarding school. For now, the show keeps the character in the mix through phone calls and vague mentions of what he’s been up to.
Ultimately, while any recast can be jarring, I think this one has the potential to work out better than most. For one, Centineo and Austin could pass for brothers, which should ease the transition somewhat. After all, Jesus has a twin sister, Mariana (played by Cierra Ramirez), so it’s smart to cast someone who looks like Austin, who, in turn, looked like Ramirez.
I’m interested to see how fans will react to the move. The Fosters is one of my favorite shows on TV at the moment, and while I’m not entirely sold on this decision, it makes sense since…well, it’s not like Jesus could be gone forever. His continued absence would be the elephant in the room, so to speak. So I get why they’re doing this. And hey, if any show can make a graceful landing on something as delicate as a recast, it’s probably The Fosters. In short, I’m all-in on this.
But what do you think of the recast? Is Noah Centineo the right man for the part? Should Jesus just have been written off altogether? Sound off in the comments!
