TBS cancels ‘The Wedding Band’
TVIt appears to be a day for cancellations, as the news of ABC’s cancellation of Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 is now followed by the announcement that TBS will not be renewing its freshman comedy series, The Wedding Band.
The show featured a lively mix of recognizable faces like Brian Austin Green and relatively big-name guest stars like Megan Fox (Green’s real life wife), and told a fairly unique sitcom story, centering on four guys who perform cover songs as part of a (you guessed it) wedding band, the tracks of which would be released on iTunes after each airing, a la Glee and Nashville.
Unfortunately, the series wasn’t really given much of an opportunity to get off the ground, being slotted into a surefire death slot: Saturday nights at 10:00 PM. The time slot doomed the series to low ratings, as the sitcom was never able to rise above 2 million total viewers, averaging only 1.4 million viewers for the finale.
This leaves Men At Work, Cougar Town, and Sullivan & Son as the only original, scripted comedies on a network that is, ostensibly, about comedy. It remains to be seen what, if anything, they decide to replace the show with, though I imagine they could probably just plug in reruns of The Big Bang Theory and do just as well.
