Somebody That I Used To Know – Who Sang It Better? – Poll

So yes, a true head-to-head-to-head Battle Round!

Over the past couple of weeks, Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know‘ hit #1 on iTunes and was covered by Lindsey Pavao on The Voice, Darren Criss and Matt Bomer on Glee, and Elise Testone and Phillip Phillips on American Idol. I can’t wait for someone to cover it on The X Factor in a few months! Or even America’s Got Talent!

Update: Pentatonix from The Sing-Off also did a cover. I’ve updated the poll.

So who sang it best? Take the poll:

Lindsey Pavao

Darren Criss and Matt Bomer

Elise Testone and Phillip Phillips

Pentatonix

Gotye

Personally, among the covers, I will have to go with my girl Lindsey Pavao as the best and Elise and Phillip’s easily the worst. But really, nothing has been close to the original so far. Maybe The X Factor will deliver?

I think people miss the conversational tone in P2's performance.  I think it lends more to the song than some of the others.  I felt a connections between he and Elise and that there was a conversation going on between the two.

Petatonix is brilliant.  For me, Glee is second.  P2 was atrocious.  I guess that put Lindsey third but only because P2 was so bad.

I hadn't heard of the song until the Glee clip sneaked here earlier. The original is such a 60s sound, it amazes me it's charting.

I think the Glee cover does not count as it was film and not live.

My vote is for Pentatonix.  Comparing all the various singing shows, these kids are just amazing.  Go watch their videos for Dogs Days are Over by Florence and the Machine or Let's Get It on by Marvin Gaye, you'll see what I mean :-)

I foresee a poll hijack by the Idol fans. Anyway, I'd have to go with Lindsey Pavao with Darren Criss' a distant second. The song is about romantic love and its hard to listen to a note for note copy of the song when the original is so much better that's why Glee's version didn't work for me. Elise and PhilPhil was crap. It felt like they were forced to sing it and it lacked any emotion. They did so much better on Stop Draggin My Heart Around. IMO if you're going to copy how it was originally sung, you have to be just as good as the original and Glee and AI's cover were subpar compared to Gotye and Kimbra's. Lindsey knows her strengths and she would've lost if she sang it like how we expected the song to sound like.

Lindsey killed it. I was all for her on the voice, but then Juliet came along...

While Darren Criss and Matt Bomer were incredible and showed much emotion and passion to the song with beautiful tones to their voices as well, .. there is still much I admire about Lindsey's version of the song.  I have heard her criticized that she lacked the passion for it, but I see and hear it in her facial expressions and voice.  She brings a very soft and womanly touch to it and I admire her to no end.  I also like the stage production they did for her.  She's a very beautiful girl with a soothing soft voice that can evoke power, emotion and passion when she wants to.  So what if she isn't loud and shaking the beams on the ceiling.  I'm backing her 100 percent and I would love to buy her cd when she comes out with one.

Wow, this song has really caught on fire. When Lindsey Pavao sang it last week, that was the first time I'd ever heard this song and suddenly it's EVERYWHERE! Love it. I'm partial to Lindsey's version above all, but I do like the Glee version too. Elise did all right with it but it just seemed like yesterday's news because it's already been done to death now, and Phillip was just average of course. Props to Lindsey/her coach for having the foresight and the taste to pick the song first while it was still fresh. It suited her style perfectly, a brilliant choice for her. It was the only Voice song from last week that's still on the top 200 iTunes chart, at least last time I checked.

@JulieBarbara Actually, Pentatonix did their cover in February, so, they picked it first ;)

Plus, Glee filmed this episode over a month ago ;)

@JulieBarbara You should go search for Walk off the Earth's cover. Their cover IMO is the definitive version of this song. Even better than Gotye and Kimbra's original.
