I like Natalie but I'm afraid she'll be the next one voted out. Everyone (almost everyone) feels Allison was robbed when she was the one out. I'm sure Natalie was thinking "it shoud have been me" but she managed to get more votes.

Heidi. I wish she was voted out earlier. She was lucky to be paired with Benji this week since it saved her this time around. I think she's a great performer, but overall i don't think she is as versatile as the others. Sadly, she's the only uninjured female.

Benji is definatly top 4. And anyone paired with Benji will be top 4. He has partnered with Natalie, Donyelle, and Heidi and has performed well with all three. I'd like to se Natalie with Travis and Ivan with Heidi, and then Beji with Donyelle. Benji and Donyelle with Comtemporary is something i'd like to see. Let's see Donyelle do jumps and spins! (poor toe :/ )

And bring Mia Michaels back!!! Her judging is probably one of the most accurate because she really emotionally connects to the performances.

I think I missed the very first show of the season (with the top twenty dancing). Does anyone remember what Benji and Donyelle danced that first show?

Peter
Peter

Allison's sister is performing with Celine Dion, so it would have been good if she had won. So she can join her sister.

TLT
TLT

Whoa, I'm blown away that Allison is gone. I really thought she might take it all - though I've personally voted for Benji more often. I wanted to scream at the television "give her a contract anyway." Her bio said she really wanted the Celine contract and I think she would be fabulous in it. However, thus far Benji has been the best "performer." I mean, most of us voting don't know enough technically about every kind of dance to really judge like a professional judge would - and besides, the camera jumps around so much you can't get a real look at it anyway - so at this point we really are just voting on performance/showmanship and Benji in my opionion does the best job of that each week. If I'm not mistaken, he and Donyelle are the only two that have never been in the bottom 2 or 3 ever on this show, right?

I'd like to see a girl win this season just because a guy did last year and I think the competition for the girls has been tougher this season than for the boys. I didn't want any of the girls to leave this week, and Allison deserves to stay longer than Ivan, but he is just better than Ryan.

I'll be torn if Benji and Heidi or Benji and Donyelle are the last two. I want Fox to just give them both the prize.

Peter
Peter

Before coming into the competition they all have established themselves somewhere. Depending on how much they do is up to them. Depending on how they want to win is up to them (learning different styles, different techiques). Because you have to learn more than one style to win.

Benji and Heidi came into the competition more prepared is all that I am saying. Being West Coast Champions boost their fan base. So when you are saying that the other dancer did win awards or events, then you are saying that they are the same. So what's the excuse for Benji and Heidi teaming an advantage.

They didn't know if they will be teaming up or even make it to the finals, but they did and they got their chance to team up. And America loved it. I never said Allison or Ryan learning as a hobby and I never said the amount of times they've competed that makes them a better dancer. Allison is my top 2, and I feel really bad. I was so sad, I couldn't write anything on the other post because it was all about Allison leaving :(

I'm really glad to see Ivan staying, but I'm sad that Allison is gone. I would have preferred Natalie go. I've never understood what's so special about Donyelle, but I'll defer to the judges opinion of her there because they seem to think she's fantastic. And I'm not an expert on dancing -- I only know what I personally enjoy watching. Er, or who I enjoy watching. And Allison would have been at the top for me, though I'm not sure it's not just because Ivan partners so well with her.

sofia
sofia

yeah i agree with 108. i don't think it's how many times you've competed that makes you a better dancer.

and what about the dance style that don't necesarily need a partner? like contemporary or hip-hop? which makes up 6 out of the top 8. the only 2 dancers on there who have practiced partnerships before the show and SPECIALIZE in partner dances are benji and heidi. and that's why they partner so well with other people.

i thought it was fair to put benji and heidi together. each person has had an advantage at some point and they got theirs this week.

Peter...first of all, you are making yourself sound like a jackass.

Anyone who is serious about dance has been in competitions or conventions, period. They probably have won a few of of them in fact I'll do a quick google search for you...

Allison's awards:
2004, National Senior Performer of the Year-Company Dance
2005, National Senior Outstanding Dancing-Dance Alliance

Ryan had trained with the Dance Theatre of Harlem, San Francisco Ballet, and Miami City Ballet. I totally move all over the country to train when I am not serious about something, don't you?

Too bad they got kicked off tonight...Not bad for "hobbies" I guess...

Peter
Peter

You can be as passionate as you want, but if nobody sees it, nobody cares. I'm sure there could an amazing dancer sitting at home right now that could win sytycd right now. But if I don't see that person, I can't say that person is passionate. Dancing can be a business or a hobby?

I'm not saying you have to win a award. But when you win many awards, you feel more confident. Why? Because you have a fan base. All the other contestant can do the same, but they didn't. Normally I wouldn't say that about the younger contestant, but the people performing acts on stage are getting more and more younger.

This arguement isn't even about passion anyway, it's about Benji and Heidi teaming up as an advantage. If they other contestants brought a partner too, maybe they might do better.

Benji has a master plan.to hypnotize us with his dancing. Dance into our hearts and then convert us. Nothing wrong with that but seems like the hyperlink redirects so people won't react to his fervor.
http://www.usaswingnet.com/Benji_interview.htm

Swing Net has an interview with Benji that sounds a little "fundie"...

USASN:
Share the story about the gang in the park that harassed you and challenged you to dance - or risk your health and well-being.

Benji:
Well they insulted me and my companion at the time. They were break-dancing. I said to their leader that he could only dance "2-3" - which mean not so great. So he wanted to see if I could do better. I challenged him and beat him in a minute. Then I said (as a reward for my having out-danced him) that he had to hear a message from me about God. As a result of that, one of his friends has completely changed his life and will be serving a mission in a few months, just like I did. There are others from that group who are currently making that great change as well. The Lord really protected us that day. There were enough gang members to kill my companion and I both! Haha!

USASN:
Besides the obvious religious teaching you were engaged in on behalf of the Mormon faith, what are some of your most satisfying accomplishments.

Benji:
Well, those were my biggest accomplishments. Nothing else compares in terms of accomplishments. But it's not a "Mormon" thing, its about people accepting Christ in their lives. To see someone change their life and be a better person, even in the slightest is the greatest satisfaction there is (for me).

Post #107 -- if one were to follow that same logic, then one could say that famous artists who were only recognised posthumously were not as "talented" or "passionate" about their work as artists who were noticed for their work while they were still alive.

one should not have to win awards in order to be viewed as "passionate". dancing is an art, and i think any true artist understands that it isn't about "pimping" yourself out or making a big name out of yourself in order to be worth anything. if you want to be recognised, that's wonderful, but it shouldn't be a requirement.

Peter
Peter

I stated the point that there is only one winner earlier. My point is that there is no escape from partnerships. Even though there is only one winner, majority of dancing is more than one people. Whether you see it in concert or a party or even on the streets.

About the advantage with Benji and Heidi, Did you forget that Benji and Donyelle danced well together too? Because Benji knows how to dance well with other people. So why didn't Donyelle and Travis do well? They both are good dancers, but they didn't do well. Donyelle never danced with Benji. Why do so many people say that the Ryan sucks, thanks goodness for Heidi. Again, they know how to partner. Heidi and Travis wasn't about the dance technique, but the feel of the choreographer's vision. If it was believeable, then it's done it's job. The judges liked it.

About passion, passion is not something we can see. You can say all you want about how much passion the other dancers have, but before sytycd started. What does the other dancers have to show for? Benji and Heidi has Championships. We live in a cruel world, if you don't have anything to show, then you have nothing. What is the reason a Yale degree or a Harvard degree so important? Because it's proof, it shows just how smart a person is. And it attracts people.

If they did have as much passion, then they would have waited. Established themselves or learn something to help improve themselves, picking up a partner doesn't hurt either. A person can dance their entire life, but if they never participate in any events, then it's just a hobby.

We have seen many couples/partners dancing in the sytycd, but not everyone makes it. So it has nothing to do with partnering, it's a skill that is learned. And they learned it.

isabel
isabel

To clear things up I was not comparing Donyelle to a monkey. I was just saying that it takse more than the ability to entertain people to be a great dancer. Donyelle is talnted, and she shines when on camrea, but many people instead of looking for quality, and geniune dancing what they want is something to entrtain them. It takes alot more to be a true performing artist then entertainment, it takes geniune emotion, passion feeling. WHich is something Donyelle has not shown in this compition. I'm sorry to say but her dancing has not matured. Unlike many of the other dancers. We have people like Heidi and Benji who are professionals, and Natalie and Ryan who will most def get have a fabulous dance career, and even Allison and Ivan, Ivan has improved tremndously and Allison already had a professional gig. But, and I'm sorry to say this, booty popping blue contact lenses and a piercing on your lip is not going to get a job in a dance company or even as a concert dancer. She would be great for a camrea in which technique isn't a big deal but not live.
sorry

sofia
sofia

in reply to #101, it IS an advantage for them. like you said, partnering needs to be taught. the benji-heidi and heidi-dmitry partnerships are so good because they spent more than one week perfecting it.

don't compare their partnerships to a couple who's been dancing together for a week. i'm sure that when they first started dancing together, they weren't as great as they are now.

how ignorant for you to say that the other dancers don't have as high a passion for dance as benji and heidi because they haven't done any competitions yet.

if you read their bios on the fox website you can see that most of the dancers started at a young age so i think it's ridiculous for you to tell them they don't have enough passion for dance.

i love benji and heidi, no doubt. but this week, they WERE given an advantage. but that's not taking away from their performance, they were AMAZING together.

I think you have no idea what the he!! you r talking about. Natalie is an amazing, emotional, captavating dancer your just hating for no reason cuz i doubt your a dancer cuz u don't know sh!t so you need to stop hating and bashing her n she doesn't try to b sexy thats her personality and she has a great one. You don't know what your talking about!!!! She's amazing and isn't concited? I have a question for you? How does she act concited? she is just funny and sweet and a beautiful girl so yeah i said my 2 cents!!!!

Okay...the whole partnering issue is pretty much a dead topic when all is said and done. The contest is an INDIVIDUAL title. When it comes down to it, it is a SOLO dancer who is going to win. And just because someone may not have been dancing with a partner in their career does not mean that they have less passion for dancing than anyone else. To think that is ridiculous. All of these dancers have proven their passion...just by making it this far.

Benji and Heidi may have a small advantage by having trained together. But let me tell you something about the dance world. It is usually very small when you reach a certain level of training. When you are competing constantly, attending conventions, or going to master classes or workshops, it is not uncommon to meet dancers from all across the country. It is likely that some of these dancers knew each other, if not danced together, before making the show.

Post 99 – agreed. Ivan is very underrated but for a good reason. When the finals started, it was mainly Ivan’s poor performance that sent him & his partner (Allison) into the bottom 3 for several weeks. So, if you judge based on first impressions, Ivan was just an average dancer who wouldn’t even make the final 10. He appeared to be nothing special. However, since then, Ivan has caught on fire and giving spectacular performances. You could make a good case that with his most recent dances, he has the most momentum of all the dancers. People love rooting for the underdog – those who have limited talent but somehow they get better & better & rise up to the challenge. Not to mention, the judges (especially the producers) know this and that’s why they are rooting for him too.

Side note: Good to see that Cicely and Olisa were not judges this week.

Peter
Peter

For all those that think Benji and Heidi teaming up is an advantage, it's not. They worked to where they are at now because of hard work. That's why they are the West Coast Swing Champions. Benji and Heidi has been dancing almost their entire life. Heidi spends her money to learn how to dance so she can get better.

If the rest of the people couldn't find partners, that's their problem. Benji and Heidi have been all over, that's because it's their passion. The competition isn't looking for someone who just loves to dance, but willing to improve themselves.

If the other dancers tried to improve their dancing before sytycd, they would have a reputation as a good dancer just like Benji and Heidi. But they don't, which means their passion for dancing isn't as high. Sure Benji has a dancing family. But if they have a dream, nothing should stop them. There shouldn't be any excuses. If they aren't ready yet, then they aren't ready to win. They should have waited for next season.

And last season partnering didn't help with Melody and Craig. Partnering is a skill that needs to be taught. There is a difference between dancing solo and pairing up. Benji and Heidi have learned to dance with a partners. Heidi and Dmitry has placed 4th in Latin Ball Championship. Different partner, but somewhat decent placing. I don't know what kind of placing the other dancers will do, because Dmitry makes his partners disappear.

But the fact is, no one can touch Benji when he is dancing with a partner. He makes other people look good. He's never been at the bottom. And dancing with someone is harder because they have to make sure they time everything right with the partner.

Just because a person can do a killer solo like Musa, doesn't mean they can dance, it means they can dance well at what they specialize in (by themselves). But those who are good dancers can learn and adapt.

ivan is extremely underrated on these boards. the guy gets no respect, and its just sad. i understand that benji and donyelle are fan favorites and could fall off the stage and still not get voted off, but the blind favoritism shown on ALL the message boards i have seen is unbelievable. give the guy some credit and respect, you cannot be in the top 8 without being a great dancer. i almost hope he does not win so he can go on to do great, great things. he is special. so special. i voted at least 40 times for him last night (though it should have been more). if i had more time, i would have voted for all two hours straight. the guy is great.

go ivan!

oh yeah--- out tonight...... ryan (easily) and natalie or donyelle

Julie

First of all, I'd like to say that Ivan and Allison's hip hop routine blew me away. Personally, I thought that was the best dance of the night. Heidi and Benji, wow, they are awesome together!!!! I'm not sure who was better, this couple or Ivan and Allison, I couldn't take my eyes off either of them, especially Ivan. I never knew Benji and Heidi had danced together at some US Swing Championships, or that they were even related! But it does kind of make sense, because they are both so energetic and brilliant dancers.

Some people are complaining that it was unfair for Benji and Heidi to be paired up. As a viewer, I don't really mind that Benji and Heidi have danced professionally together in the past, they haven't been paired up in the show, and they gave us some really great entertainment! As for Ivan being paired up with Allison again, I didn't know you could get a partner you'd already danced with...

Although I'm not crazy over Ryan (but I don't dislike him either), I thought the judges were a little too harsh on him. It makes me feel sorry for him, especially when he does his little begging thing at the end. Sorry Ryan, but it's your time to go home...I hope Natalie doesn't go home she's an awesome dancer...

I heard on this site that the producers and judges of the show arrange the partners themselves, and that they try to keep certain dancers on the show because of that Celine Dion job contract or whatever it is. Is this really true? (if it is, then it explains how Ivan managed to "draw" from the hat a partner whom he works well with) If the producers have already picked out a winner and are trying to bias the audience to vote for their favourite, then what's the point of having a competition? I think this is really really unfair. The winner should be a dancer who has the most amazing talents overall,in every type of dance, not just the best contemporary dancer who'd work well on that Dion show. If the producers are really brainwashing the audience to vote for their favorite, then this is a rip-off. It is not AMERICA'S favorite dancer, it's FOX'S fav dancer. If they are going to do this, then the prize should be a job contract on whatever show the winner wants, not a specific type of dance show, right? I know Fox wants good ratings and all, but I think it'd do just as fine without prejudging the viewers and settling on a pre-picked winner. It'd probably do even better if they made it purely fan-based, in my opinion.

On a final note - yeah we got to see Dmitry again, rooting for Natalie. I agree with a previous comment someone posted, it should've been him up there dancing with her rather than Ryan. Oh well.

My top 6 favourites - Benji, Travis, and Ivan. Heidi, Allison and Natalie.
