So You Think You Can Dance Tour — Long Island, NY
Movmnt gave me a ticket to the So You Think You Can Dance show in Long Island. Thanks guys!
I have to say that SYTYCD fans are totally different from American Idol fans. The audience was generally older, still a lot of screaming girls, but also noticeably a lot of gay men. Also, everyone was kinda “behaved” and they were treating the show like it was a stage play and not a crazy concert like AI. Very interesting I thought.
Nassau Coliseum was packed. I would say that it was just as full as the Manchester and Portland concerts I went to for American Idol. I’m not surprised now that Fox has chosen to do their shows in arenas instead of places more intimate. There is a demand for SYTYCD. I heard the west coast shows have been sold out for weeks.
So what do I think of it? Well, it was great. I now know the formula of So You Think You Can Dance — come up with great routines during the TV show so fans have something to look forward to during the tour. It doesn’t really matter who wins. So basically, Wade Robson, Tyce and Mia Michaels are the stars of the show even if they were not there. Expect some more intersting stuff next year — they should make it a competition for choreographers as well. Paging Nigel.
I’m very happy that Danny Tidwell had a lot of fans who came to the show. I would say that he just edged out Neil Haskell in the screams. Neil just had the more explosive routines with the flips, but Danny got a couple of long loud applauses. Danny and Neil pretty much owned the show. After the tour they should think of a “dance tour” like cirque de soliel. That would be awesome. This has so much potential.
Dominic did some comedy routines and was certainly enjoying his “starlet” status. Maybe they’ll give him some sort of hosting job next year.
A necessary evil was that there were a lot of videos shown from the show. I think they had to do this to give people time to rest and breathe. As much as one number after another would have made for a more exciting show, we don’t want these guys to collapse on stage.
During the meet and greet after the show, I got to meet Hok (who told me that they did not do their hip-hop routine tonight because he hurt his back), Dominic, Pasha, Neil and Lacey. Lacey liked my camera and then she gave rickey.org a shout-out. Weee. I also got to meet Ray who was the handler for the dancers and the Idols during the Idol tour. He’s great. Maybe I’ll see him again next year.
Unfortunately, Danny had back problems and did not attend the meet and greet. I hope he gets better but I cannot hide my disappointment that I was not able to get my Neil-Danny sandwich picture! This means I will have to find another way… Sigh. I need frequent flyer miles. I have no more money. I hope Danny gets enough rest tonight. Go Danny!
The other dancers were there too, but I felt down that Danny Tidwell was not showing up so I left. It was also raining and I wanted to go home.
Finally, I just realized that I’m quite small. Hok and Dominic look tiny on TV, and they’re both bigger than me! Yup, that’s my goal when I grow up: to gain three inches.
Dominic liked my Venom t-shirt. (I do too).
Lacey Schwimmer shout-out:
