So You Think You Can Dance Results Show Canceled
Season 9 of So You Think You Can Dance will have no results shows. Nigel Lythgoe tweeted the announcement: “#FOX have cancelled the results show so I will have to change the format of #SYTYCD. At least we have another season at the end of MAY.”
So half the season is canceled and we’re actually going to get a completely different show when it airs. Great. This is what happens when you change your set design which makes the dancers look awful no matter how “good” they are — people stop watching.
Nigel reassured fans however that they will find some great talent this season:
“Don’t worry #SYTYCD fans. I’m thrilled we have a new series. We’ll do our best to find some great talent starting next week in Atlanta.”
I’m actually not surprised by this decision by FOX. To me it felt like Season 8 was going to be their last season after disappointing ratings even after some prominent guest judges joined the show. I guess they renewed it for one season out of goodwill for Nigel because of American Idol. Why renew something when it’s going to be at least 50% different from the previous season?
Unfortunately, having one show a week, SYTYCD is now forced to copy The Voice! The Voice didn’t have results shows during the first voting rounds with contestants finding out if they will sing or not on the day of the competition. We’ll probably see this type of mechanic on SYTYCD too.
On a side note: Wow, I’ve been following SYTYCD since it began! That’s seven years! So sad to see it go down like this. Hopefully Nigel finds a formula to keep it relevant to it’s core audience. Maybe something simpler and more intimate? (hint, hint)

I’m certainly not mad at FOX they have supported #SYTYCD FOR 9 seasons. With the help of Mike Darnell I think we have some great new ideas.

I agree with you Rickey, the set drove me away too. It was so cavernous and the dancers couldn't command it as well as the smaller, more intimate stage of seasons old did.
I enjoyed season 7 the most because it was about the dancing. They had judges that actually discussed the dancing.
Season 8 was about everything but the dancing. They never critiqued the dancing...especially the dancers who were the judges favorites.
I say bring Mia Michaels back. Keep a rotating judge, but no celebrity judges! Go back to the early years where notable dancers/choreographers judged.
I know people demonize Simon Cowell's arrogance (and he is, and admits it), but Nigel is just as cocky. Not all of his changes to this show and Idol have been great.

I've always been conflicted about this show, on the one hand it promotes art but on the other it makes a competition out of it. Ditto for all of the singing shows. I guess watching a full musical concert or ballet on public television isn't stimulating enough for the average person anymore, only the demeaning audition phase of art satisfies the modern video-game-playing mentality prevalent today.
