‘Smash’ Star Krysta Rodriguez Joins ‘Chasing Life’ Season 2

Krysta Rodriguez is heading from NBC’s Smash to ABC Family’s Chasing Life in a role that mirrors the struggles she’s facing in her personal life.

Rodriguez will play the role of Vanessa, “a fellow cancer patient who befriends April during her current hospital stay.” This comes just one month after the actress revealed she’d been diagnosed with breast cancer. However, she’s a fighter, and a hell of a talent, so for what it’s worth, I’m thrilled to see that she’s continuing to work. And in roles that don’t shy away from the severity of her personal struggles. She’s far braver than I imagine I’d be in the same situation.

Of course, in a fun little factoid, Rodriguez is now the second Smash alum to play a cancer patient on Chasing Life, as Andy Mientus also appeared on the series. He’s now semi-recurring on The Flash as the Pied Piper, so this continues the streak of Smash alums getting steady work, which makes me insanely happy (I still miss Smash like crazy, as well as the actors in that cast. Dammit, Hollywood, get Jack Davenport something good!).
