Scotty McCreery is #1 – Ranking the American Idol 10 Top 12
Scotty McCreery was the most popular contestant on American Idol this week. He jumped up five spots from #6 last week, and is now tied at #2 with Paul McDonald for season average.
Naima Adedapo moved 11 spots to #2 this week, and improves her season average to #7 tied with Jacob Lusk.
Pia Toscano remains the favorite to win American Idol, keeping her #1 season average for two weeks in a row. She is at #3 this week.
James Durbin moved 4 spots to #4 this week, and improves to #6 for the season.
Paul McDonald slips to #5 this week, but keeps his #2 average for the season tied with Scotty McCreery.
Lauren Alaina was at #12 this week and is #10 for the season. Lauren is still regarded as a contender to win it all, but her numbers are definitely not showing it. Can she make a comeback?
Ashthon Jones had the least views on the blog this week, and was voted off the show.
After a bit of research, I’m making major adjustments to the numbers moving forward. As some of you already suspect, the blog gets visited by a significant number of Filipino fans residing in the Philippines. I’m just assuming that they can’t affect the voting process on the show as much as they can affect pageviews and polling numbers, so I’m going to take a few numbers away.
32% of the pageviews for Thia Megia are coming directly from the Philippines, while the average for the other contestants is just 13%. Some of them are as low as 9% like Scotty and Paul. I’m subtracting 19% of Thia’s pageviews to compensate for the discrepancy. It’s not perfect, but Thia’s numbers are unusually high and this is the simplest way to adjust it. With raw numbers, Thia would have been at #5 this week, but with the adjustment she is at #8.

Got Something to Add?
I'm Taylor, i think your a wonderful singer. You'll always have my vote. Any girl is lucky to have you.
Just wanna say that don't count the Filipinos out because they CAN VOTE! Ever heard of Magic Jack & Vonage? Well, most homes in the Phil.have them. And there is also the new software that can be used to call the states for free. Fil. are tech freaks, just so you know. :-)
The top 5 James D Pia T Scotty M Lauren A Casey A. one of these BETTER win. average are Naima A Haeley R and Thia M the rest can go home in any order.
Having read all the comments here, it would be interesting if there is an American Idol Night. The finalists would be choosing from a collection of songs that have been successfully recorded and popularized by AI alumni.
I wonder how James Durbin interprets Mad World; Thia - No Air; and so forth. Then we would know if this year's group is really the best. Hmmm...
Where do these rankings come from? Do you just make them up? Lauren Alaian has one of the top fanbases and that's a fact.
I don't like scotty...jacee should be there instead of him...kind of creepy look...mmm can't understand why the american idol let go a real american idol jacee badeaux...
I agree with some others who've pointed out that once Scotty is forced to sing songs other than country, he's probably going to be dead in the water. Maybe he'll be able to 'interpret' a song or two to suit his voice, but that's it. I don't see him becoming the next AI at all.
James and Casey are the best this season, imo. Pia is good too but she needs to get out of Celine Dion mode, and become more 'relevant', to use judge-speak. I thought Haley was good this past week - didn't like her before. I like Naima, but not this past week. Paul needs to fall off the stage while performing his dance moves - can't stand him!
Scotty's taking this!!! I have my entire family voting for him, IMO he been the best since hearing "Long Black Train", that performance alone shows me the kid should win this.
Can't wait Scotty's album, gonna buy then for everyone next x-mas!!! :D
I think this is an interesting way to track contestants and make it interesting. It'd be nice to have those bar graphs or pie charts, but wouldn't this be a lot of work for Rickey? Especially if he has to separate statistics for US viewers vs those abroad. It'd be nice, but man would I hate to be the one to have to compile all of that data together.
just found this :
Kristy Lee Cook Winner Prophecy
Kris-Ty Lee Cook :
the only one who could complete the list in this season is Scotty McCreery
Scotty could easily win the whole shebang. Country fans are fierce and it seems almost impossible for a female to win AI anymore. I'd love to see Lauren Alaina win.
I think its way too early too tell. Look at Kris Allen he came out of no ware. Even Lee whats his name. (I honestly forgot it)Seriously, Crystal's voice blew him out of the water and he ended up winning it all. Scotty seems like a great guy and is the Perfect country singer . We will have to wait until AI gets in to theme weeks. Like Disco ect... I feel he doesn"t have the versatility that some of the other contestants have. Like for instance Pia, Lauren, James and Stephano.
I call him Scotty McCreepy, LOL! He's definitely radio/album ready with that beautiful recording voice of his. But, his personality is very dry and he has little-to-no star quality. (although, most Country stars are pretty lame)
I dislike country music. I especially hate some of the modern trashy country music on some radio stations today. I've been forced to listen to a huge amount of country radio stations so I DO know all the songs and the artists. So from someone who isn't pro-country but is an experienced country music listener, I am very sure that Scotty will make a lot of money from Nashville after Idol. Good for him.
Rickey: Could you add a horizontal bar graph as the background of the ranking list? It would better show how close some of the ranking really are. Pia has a third of 1% less vote than what Naima had. I wouldn't call that anything other than a tie. A bar graph would make something like that a lot more noticeable to the viewers. For example of the scalings, this week's scotty's bar would be full, and Ashton's would be less than half full. Paul would be about 90% full.
Hi Rickey. I suggest you also post the US-only pageviews and the Worldwide pageviews. Let the people do their own analysis and make their own conclusion.
i am glad that scott is making no 1 this week.he is sure connecting with the audience and also the voters in america.
good to see my favourite doing well so far.
Thanks for clarifying the intention of the adjusting made in the voting results.
On the other hand, just my opinion, if possible, maybe we can adjust the results as follows;
-->Show two version of voting results (1- purely from US votes, 2 - votes all over the world). I guess this is clearer and will not mislead viewers on the total voting process on your website.
Thanks and good day :-)
yes selena. it is possible.
i am based now in the Philippines but the IP address that i am using right now is 205.x.116.x which is an IP address that is based in Grand Junction, Colorado. I used a simple software and a little script of my own to change my IP address.
I haven't tried going to the American Idol to vote for any contestant that I would like to win because of one single reason, which is I am not an American. The contest is about American talent which I don't want to mess with...
But if I want, I can do a single google search to compile all American IP addresses and use it into my advantage to vote for the contestant I would like to win (since online voting is permitted now, but like to what I've said, I dont want to mess with the real results :P )...
Reason why I change my IP address? Some youtube videos are not permitted to be viewed in the Philippines, same goes for Hulu.
I read that people from the other countries can vote for AI also using different methods and software? Is that still possible?
Nice try! No doubt Scotty is in the top position as he is clearly the one that led in DialIdol plus obviously he has the most thunderous claps during the show. Well, less than Adam Lambert of course.
With regard to this project, I guess it it quite important to take note that most of the viewers here are those that are not able to watch the show live and, therefore. are the ones without the power to vote.
Obviously I do not vote and in my case, I only click the videos of those I prefer based on the real show and just wait for it to be aired in my location eight hours later. So far my Top 5 Picks List has not changed because I do not find the others spectacular enough to unsit anyone of them.
So far, my stats have been accurate that I was able to guess the exact bottom 3 and the one who would go home first.
I am very happy to see Scotty in number 1 spot. I hope this will also follow with the votes that he is getting in. I love his vibe! Very natural and marketable! I hope he gets to the finale.
About Filipinos adding up to Thia's views , I don't think that is the best thing to do. I think most Filipinos watching Thia's page would also watch other contestant's page. I don't think you are getting the statistics right. Did you also remove the percentage visitors view from Canada? China? Brit? for other contestants? Whew! Did you also consider the page views of Filipinos viewing other contestants?
Aside from Thia, I view my faves Pia, Stefano, Casey and Paul. I think other Filipinos would also view other contestants page views. Thus, I think there is a big problem with the statistics. I think you can find a better way of doing this statistics by coming up with a program where IP addressess are segregated by country so you can get a more accurate and precise statistics for this.
Hey, Rickey. Don't underestimate the resourcefulness of the Filipino fans. If they decide to come together, they can really do something special. But Thia has not been doing anything spectacular, so I am not moving any mountain for her.
I think your rating is just about right. Thia may even be in danger next week. Maybe Haley should have had a higher rating than Karen, but Karen's too likable and very pretty. She will have a lot of the male votes.
Too bad Jacob decided to do vocal calisthenics. He should have been there in the top 5. Well, there's always next week. And I think of all the contestants, Jacob will be the one who could get the judges' save.
No haters! Just an opinion.
Scotty is cute, too bad i don't understand country, so to me the thing he's trying to do sounds absolutely horrendous. Like almost creepy in a way.
go stefano!! hey can someone tell me if Stefano is dating Karen? there are 2 pictures of them holding hands and really close to each other..
I'm pretty sure that none of the contestants this year are going to have to step outside of their own genre. It is one of the changes made for this season. Which to me makes so much more sense. The judges in the past were always preaching to the kids "find yourself, know what kind of artist you are" and then they force them to sing in a genre they would NEVER dream of singing in if given the choice.
I love it. It's the TOP 12! I just want to make some silly comparisons of the TOP 12 to previous AI Alums.
1. Stefano Langone – Elliot Yamin
Oh boy Stefano is my fave! I will be bias here. Good that he is back in the contest. I just love how he does take the song with courage and dancing. I also love it when he goes side view when he hits the high notes. He is gorgeous! He may not win but become successful with his very nice voice and good looks. He can be the next Elliot Yamin. What if there is a week where they sing a song from an IDOL ALUM? He should sing “WAIT FOR YOU” to show his great vocals or dance to “MOVIN ON!”
2. Pia Toscano – Katharine McPhee
Singing big songs, gifted with beautiful face, nice personality and very marketable are some features they both have in common. However, she does not have the confidence of Katharine. She needs to believe in herself and be more comfortable performing on stage.
ALUM SONG: “Ordinary World”
3. Jacob Lusk – Rubben Studdard
Jacob and Rubben are both contestants with great, soulful vocals. He can win this thing by continuing to sing the songs well with his vocal skills. Of course, he should avoid overdoing his singing. He should also avoid making strange faces and those horrific stares. Jacob is in it to win it. After “I Believe I can Fly” he can sing “Flying Without Wings” just like Studdard did in his finale song.
ALUM SONG: I need an ANGEL! (Because it is again about flying!)
4. Scotty McCreery – Jason Castro
Scotty can be successful if he takes the Jason Castro path which is to play game the way he feels it. Be more natural, don’t pretend to be someone else, just be cool all the time. Scotty has this country vibe like Jason has. Jason played the first instrument on stage. I think Scotty should do it too. I am sure a “Hallelujah” performance by Scotty would be nice.
ALUM SONG: “Let’s Just Fall in Love Again”
5. Thia Megia – Jordin Sparks
They are both opposites physically. Hehehe. Thia has better vocals. Her good vocals should be used well by picking smart songs. She need smart songs which will show her character, personality and connection with audience and viewers. If she “I who have nothing” was performed by Jordin in AI, Thia would love to take on that song too. I hope she can get the chance to sing it.
ALUM SONG: BATTLEFIELD? Nay. TATTOO!? Nay. NO AIR! That would be nice!
6. Paul McDonald – David Cook
David Cook is one of the most successful white guy with guitar who made it through to the finale with his bravery in taking his songs and making it his own. With Paul’s unique voice he can win this thing but he should show more bravery in making songs unique as well. Like David C, A “Dare You To Move” would be nice song for Paul. Paul can be a male version of MEGAN JOY CORKREY!
ALUM SONG: LIGHT ON
7. Casey Abrams – Taylor Hicks
Like Taylor Hicks, Casey is by far the most interesting contestant in the Top 12. He has this surprising side in him that you have to see what he is going to do week after week. He can be the next Taylor Hicks if he keeps his interesting performances going.
ALUM SONG: I was never interested with Taylor Hicks
8. Naima Adedapo – Fantasia
After doing the best performance by Fantasia , Naima failed to meet the standard set to the song. However, Naima showed how a performer she is. She can win this thing by doing what she can really do which is to take challenge in every performance like Fantasia did. With her nice persona upstage she can be the most entertaining contestant and definitely win this.
ALUM SONG: I BELIEVE
9. Haley Reinhart – Diana DeGarmo
Haley is young and has very nice, unique raspy voice. However, she needs to sing songs that will show energy like her age. She can try upbeat tunes that will show her confidence on stage. She needs to be more vibrant in the performances like DeGarmo’s “Turn the Beat around” and “Do you love Me” performances.
10. Lauren Alaina – Kelly Clarkson
She really reminds me of Kelly Clarkson. She is pretty, very young, active and garrulous. She can make it to the finale if she tackles songs with grace and boldness all the time. She was first seen very confident, but I hope it continues.
ALUM SONG: My Life would suck without you! EPIC!
11. James Durbin – Adam Lambert
Adam Lambert is the most daring contestant in Idol Hostory. He is also smart and musically gifted with his amazing vocals. He is also a connoisseur in giving out the best performance on stage. James need to play the game well like Lambert din to put him on top. He has good, strong vocals amongst the guys. Performance wise, he needed to show more creativity and sing his songs with much glamour like Glambert!
ALUM SONG: WHATAYA WANT FROM ME!
12. Karen Rodriguez – Tamyra Gray
I find it so hard to look for an AI Alum that would compare her. Amongst the successful ones, I think Tamyra Gray would best compare to her. She can tackle all the big songs like MC’s, CD’s, WH’s. She can do better in the contest if she does justice to big songs like Tamyra did. However, she will not win. Somewhere over the Rainbow or IWALY would be big songs she can try out.
Whew! Did we have similar comparisons?s
I couldn't agree more! That would be the best thing to do. Focus on the Unique Pageviews which will actually give us a more accurate stats.
You can try using the US Pageviews to see if it works. This way you might be able to predict the AI winner. Statistically, the random number of people viewing the page would most likely be correlated to the total votes getting in.
In th end, once an AI winner is declared, it is not only America who gets to support his/her fame but the rest of the countries as well. But still only America gets to vote! America decides! Other countries would show support as to who they want to win.
How about these settings:
All-U.S. Traffic. Unique Pageviews ("... pageviews that are generated by the same user during the same session. A unique pageview represents the number of sessions during which that page was viewed one or more times.")
And then people will complain that they are not included, that they can vote via Skype, etc. etc.
Yes.. The best way would be to remove all page views from other countries and try focusing on US viewers. If 90% of the US viewers might be the actual voters then we are looking at a clear view of who is getting the lead. We can also assume that the viewers who keeps on repeating their views of their favorite contestants would also mean the times they have voted for the contestants. This way we can get a real picture of the ranking.
I also think that there should also be a time limit as to when you tally the statistics. I would also love to see the statistics before the elimination night so that we can see if this ranking has something to do with the actual bottom 3 during elimination night. :) Would that be a good idea?
Thanks Rickey for replying. I am one of your avid follower and I get to see what's hapenning in the Idol world even if I am in China. Keep up the blog!
Wait, hold on, I lied -- it's actually quite easy I just discovered.
Should I just use all-U.S. traffic for the rankings? If I do that then Paul McDonald is the frontrunner for 2 weeks now and not Pia Toscano. Hmmm...
If you read my post clearly, I said that the average percentage of views from the Philippines for everybody else was 13% compared to 32% for Thia. That's a huge difference.
8% of pageviews for the entire blog from March 9-10 were from the Philippines, 6% from Canada and the rest less than that. The distribution of views from Canada were more or less the same for all the contestants: 4-6%, and for the UK 1% for everybody. The only discrepancy really came from Thia's numbers from the Philippines.
I just want to keep it simple and adjust Thia's pageviews to what seems reasonable. Filtering all the stats you suggest is too much work for what it is. Ultimately, if I remove all the Philippine pageviews, Thia will rank lower than Jacob Lusk -- so actually, it's still a bit inflated now.
He even couldn't fit in the group singing on result show.
If u watch it again, during the group singing, you hardly hear his voice in the group song.
