American Idol aint going nowhere I assure you....you can all predict the demise but keep in mind the show is still Fox's highest rated show and not to mention it still has some of TVs highest key demo numbers....its still the grand dame of TV reality shows and the one I prefer......lets see if the Voice can last this many seasons :)

I think the big part of the reason is this all-girl top 5/season.  The big block of the AI viewers, and the most passionate ones, have been the young girls and cougars.  With no real hot guys for them to oggle, they're abandoning the show.  And to add insult to injury, there were two top 4 weeks.  It's like the show is cramming the ladies down the viewers' throat.

It's a bit of a catch-22.  Have a few hot guys on the show, get higher ratings.  These guys will breeze through the competition and win and you have dud winners who won't sell records.

Did I hear "Abandon Ship?"

So sad, this season is over! Please let season 13 be better. Will 13 we a lucky number for idol? lols   I still love the show regardless of it's poor ratings, it's still my baby.

Nigel should just cancel AI after this season and put it out of its misery!  AI's format is tired and hackneyed, has little credibility and excitement, and lackluster judges. The VOICE reigns supreme, because of its exciting format, solid talent, judges who are charismatic with "superstar" status.

@djfabian I don't understand why you always need to compare American Idol to The Voice. Can't Idol stand on it's own merit? You always betray your intentions with your arguments.

Of course Idol isn't going anywhere. It will probably be around for at least three more seasons. But the blow to the ego will and has been painful.

@IdleTime This argument always baffles me...as a ton of those girls and cougars are outside of that important demo. :P

I still think it was a natural course of events and a reflection of changing television habits and the course and age of the show. Nothing has yet to really convince me otherwise.

@IdleTime A few of those guys did ok.  :) I'm with Rickey now, who cares what happens after the show. Just make good tv and have some decent ratings.  Hopefully idol will CAST the right people next season. WE need fun, talented and some damn eye candy.

@MauiKane THE VOICE is about as exciting as a bowel movement....the format stinks.....and the "washed up" talent looking for a third and fourth shot at fame....hardly makes for exciting TV.....OH and did I mention not a single success in 3 seasons...a complete waste of my time for sure!

@Rickey @djfabian I get tired of the constant "The Voice" is so much better comments which i find quite laughable :) Idol stands tall on its own merits :)

@Klope62 @IdleTime I agree with you.  No doubt about the age of the show and its format feeling worn and tired.  I'm talking about how the ratings have plummeted so much *within* this season.  That has got something to do with the cast not being diverse enough.  Just imagine AI Season 4 if there were several Carrie Underwoods (like how many good female singers this year) competing with each other, it would have been lackluster as well.  Something about girl against girl is just not as enticing as guys vs. girls or guys vs. guys.

But the next 2 weeks we should see a spike in ratings though.

@Klope62 @IdleTime It was still #1 in the demo last year for reality shows.

It's not as if The Voice "beat" Idol... it's been steady from Seasons 2-4 so far with slight increases. It's Idol that fell a lot from season 11 to 12. It's now getting beat regularly by the dramas -- not because those ratings have increased significantly, but because Idol has fallen so low. It finally lost its magic this year. This I think is a significant development.

Notice Gabe that I didn't try "that hard" this year unlike previous seasons... :)

@djfabian How many past Idols showed up on AI because they couldn't get a record deal? More than a few. Who's the last Idol to have won a Grammy? You keep trotting out this tired argument like it means anything, it doesn't. People are more interested in The Voice, and the ratings reflect that. No matter how much you, or the Idol PTB will try to spin it.

@Rickey @IdleTime @Klope62 I'd think that this year's top 3's rating will be higher than last week's top 4 redux, which essentially was a repeat.  Will see.

@IdleTime @Klope62 No spike the Top 3 is always the worst rated show of the season every season. And then even if the ratings go up for the finale, it will still be the lowest rated finale ever for both shows.

We are looking at a full loss scenario here. :)

@MauiKane Thx Maui for backing me up. I tried to be polite & rational with my reply. But like I said, these same arguments w/out anything else to add to it...SO annoying.

@Mikhail XO @Pisto75666 @djfabian Whose the Last Voice winner to sell a record....whose the last Voice winner to "watch" a Grammy awards show....cant even say nominate cause that would be laughable :)....Idols ship continues to sail along....not the monster numbers they once had but still one of TVs top 10 TV shows...and easily Fox's highest rated show....please accept my apoliges if I find the Voice incredibilly boring television. :)  Its about as exciting as missionary position Sex!

@Mikhail XO @Trey_ @djfabian Oh! Above you said that "nobody's listening because The Voice is killing Idol" - i thought that was the equivalent to "the Voice is playing a role in Idol's declining numbers"

Trey_
Trey_

@Mikhail XO @djfabian But Idol is failing because of Idol. Not because The Voice is "killing" it. If there were no The Voice then Idol's numbers more than likely wouldn't be better if the same stuff was plaguing it as it is now.
