American Idol

Ratings: American Idol drops 27%, ties Big Bang theory in first half

The Big Bang Theory tied with American Idol from 8 to 8:30 pm last night, both with a 5.2 rating (pending additional adjustments). American Idol topped the night with a 5.7 rating – down 27% from last season – and 17.7 million viewers. Person of Interest had a series high.

I am shell-shocked. This is it people. The time has finally come.

From TVbytheNumbers:

Fox had Nielsen do a rush job on the time zone adjusted final national ratings and American Idol was adjusted up to a 5.7 adults 18-49 rating, which was down 27% vs. the 7.8 rating for last season’s Thursday premiere.

The Big Bang Theory’s 5.2 adults 18-49 rating, topped American Idol’s 5.1 rating in the 8:00-8:30 half hour (update: now tied pending any BBT adjustments) and was down just a tenth vs. a 5.3 rating last week. Facing Idol in its second outing, Rob had a 3.6 adults 18-49 rating, down a respectable 12% vs. a 4.1 rating for its premiere last week. Person Of Interest had a series high 3.3 adults 18-49, up a tenth vs. a 3.2 rating last week. The Mentalist’s 2.9 adults 18-49 rating was up 7% vs. a 2.7 rating last week.

Season 11 got off to a rough start. But the Idol faithful will keep this show #1. Go SEASON 11

I am an avid Idol fan for a decade. I am skipping the audition shows this year and from now on. I'll start in during Hollywood Week. That means I'm in the 25% that finally got fed up with the slow ass/scripted audition shows and took a stand.

I don't get the panic really. Yes the ratings are down, but it's still one of the highest rated shows on network t.v. The longer a show is on the more people tend to lose interest, that's just life, but AI would have to fall a lot farther to be in any danger of being canceled.

@Julie_Idol This is the first time (after Idol became a phenom after Season1) that an audition show fell below 20 million viewers. That is really significant. It is no longer "untouchable". I was in the same boat defending Idol's ratings slide for the last two years, but we've crossed new territory this week.

@Mikhail XO For The Voice? :)

I'm a little shell-shocked at the moment. I knew it would be bad, but not this bad. What am I going to say: that competition is tough this year? It's obvious that the core audience has shrunk and there's no spinning out of that. American Idol lost 1/4 of it's adult audience and Big Bang Theory is not to blame for that. Fans have just lost interest in the show.

Panic!

@blkeener Given Idol's track record of producing "artists", I have to say, the Voice is doing us a favor.

@richardrushfield Oh yes Richard. Those abusive XF haters need to be put in their place! I didn't think payback would happen so soon!

@Rickey@Mikhail XO Dia and Xenia songs are pretty good. I'm just disappointed why their record label aren't pushing them enough. It's pointless in my opinion,if every alumni that came out from The Voice flopped.

@Mikhail XO I'm still cautious about The Voice -- I'm a jinx! But yes, I am excited. I really hope it does well!
