American Idol

Ratings: American Idol down 9% from last week

Update: American Idol adjusted up to 5.1

American Idol had a 4.9 adult rating last night, down from 5.4 last week. This was still enough to be #1 for the night and beat The Voice which had a 4.6 this week.

However, Idol could not beat Dancing with the Stars and NCIS in total viewers. DWTS had 18.79 million and NCIS had 19.05 million. Idol had 16.6 million total. So Idol is not the most watched show this week, but it is still the highest rated which is what matters.

I think we’re finally going to get our dogfight between The Voice and American Idol. With The Voice settling in at the 4’s and with Idol doing the same, it’s going to be interesting week after week. Both of these shows won’t beat DWTS or NCIS in total number of viewers though. But when did that statistic matter to me?

The rest of the numbers:

From FOX Research:

@AmericanIdol was the No. 1 program last night in A18-49 (4.9/14), A18-34 (3.4/12) & Total Viewers (16.6 million)

From TVbytheNumbers:

American Idol fell half a ratings point with adults 18-49 to a 4.9 rating between 8-10p, but with ABC in repeats, Fox still easily won the night.

CBS’s Survivor fell three tenths from last week to a low 2.7 adults 18-49 rating, but with ABC in repeats, Criminal Minds bounced back four tenths to a 3.2 adults 18-49 rating. But CSI was down three tenths from last week to a 2.5 adults 18-49 rating.

Last night and the week befoe have been good shows. The problem there is direct competition. Head to Head with Dancing with the Stars -really!

Interesting to note that Walking Dead almost matched Idol this week with a 4.7 (but we usually don't get adjusted cable numbers, so it could be a few points higher). A cable tv series beating the #1 network show of the week? Now that would be quite a feat!
