Ratings: American Idol 12 down 19% from last season’s premiere
American Idol 12 season premiere had a 6.0 adult rating on Wednesday — down 19% from last year’s 7.4 rating. The show had 17.91 million — a loss of 4 million viewers from last year.
I’m stunned. It’s going to be downhill from here and I won’t be surprised if the ratings settle at the mid-4′s throughout the rest of the season. I’m guessing it will hit the 4′s in two weeks.
Long live American Idol!
American Idol returned Wednesday night, and Fast National returns give the veteran singing competition’s twelfth season premiere 17.81 million viewers and a 6.0 rating among adults 18-49 — losses of 19 percent from last January’s premiere.

Got Something to Add?
Lol, the fact that most of the people that are saying "if blah blah blah I would watch" would have no impact on the important share. :x
bummer cause i had great fun with the premiere last night! hope it can somewhat hold on the rest of the season.
TV shows tend to have worse ratings every year. I don't care if these numbers are high or low cuz it's not important to me. Actually these numbers are only for the ones who love arguing about which show is the best...
Ugh. Smh. Now everyone is going to say its Nicki's fault, when she probably brought in most of the audience that looked at it!!!!!
And I dont see what The Voice has to do with it. The show just happens to have a lot of people to tune in to it. That is all. Nothing else happens - no breakout stars, nothing.
the numbers are still among the biggest for any current network show....when u consider most shows can only muster 10-12 million for a good night................X factor is a disaster when u compare it with Idols numbers and The Voice is just a blip in my opinion.......it is yet to produce a pop star.......was never a fan of the format or its judges.....its true most shows would kill for these numbers....I know Simon Cowell would :)
Also, when it's all said and done, the Idol premiere was watch more than any episode of The Voice. Bloop. http://www.deadline.com/2013/01/ratings-rat-race-american-idol-posts-lowest-rated-in-season-premiere-down-19-from-last-year/
@Mikhail XO Never a fan of The Voice.....its format and judges never appealed to me.....and where is the shows success stories......Idol will still be the dominant reality talent show......even when it settles in with lower numbers in the next few weeks it will still rank higher than the Voices best showing!
@Mikhail XO how? the voice's ratings are much lower than this. Remember, the Voice Season 3 premiered with a 3.6 http://www.hitfix.com/news/tv-ratings-the-voice-posts-lowest-premiere-but-dominates-monday-for-nbc ! Let me repeat that for you. A THREE POINT SIX. 3.6. How do you even compare a 3.6 rating and a 6.0 ? People have different standards when it comes to the ratings war between Idol and the Voice.
@Mikhail XO They are going to blame Nicki Minaj. It's so predictable. Nicki probably kept the rating higher than it could have been. Idol fell 24% last season from the year before.
There is also a HUGE difference in airing in the Fall vs. Spring. If Idol falls to "normal" numbers this season, FOX is in big trouble with advertisers -- they won't be able to command the same ad rates that they used to. It's easier to make money in the Fall because ad agencies are throwing money left and right to get rid of their yearly budgets. That's why FOX didn't hesitate to renew The X Factor even with so-so ratings. They never had a show which had some loyal viewership in the Fall.
You have to look at the big picture. This is NOT GOOD for American Idol. Comparing off-season raw numbers with The Voice or X Factor is not going to convince ad buyers.
@Jenny1293 TBBT won't beat Idol tonight since it's a repeat. Just checked the sched. So hopefully a good night for Idol? We'll see...
And I don't think The Voice is "worse off". It has a better ratings profile than Idol. A big chunk of it's overall viewership are younger people compared to Idol. This is one of the reasons they brought in Nicki Minaj -- and yet the loyal (older fans) HATE her.
The Voice has a similar profile to New Girl and Glee where their viewers are younger. Ad people love this. (I do too!)
@Rickey oh, and I like that TBBT is beating every other show. I love that show. However, I don't think it will win the weekly ratings war anymore, since It will be going up against Idol now. And all the regular thursday shows are slowly returning to air.
I'm not even saying this is good for Idol. I'm just saying that if Idol is bad, then the Voice is worse off.
this isn't about TBBT or any other show . This is about Mikhail's point that The Voice is now the show to watch which is incorrect. numbers don't lie, and If anyone wants to make a bet, Idol will be the number 1 *Reality Singing Show* again this season.
