American Idol · American Idol 11 · Randy Jackson · Video

I can’t with this idiot anymore.

Last night, before Skylar Laine was voted off American Idol, Randy Jackson said “this is the best top 5 they’ve ever had on the show”… are you kidding me?

This Top 5 is one of the worst. Obviously, Randy has not been paying attention for 11 years.

The Top 5 of Season 4, 5, 7, 8 and even 2 are easily better than Season 11.

Watch the video here and take the poll:

Which Had The Best Top 5 on American Idol Ever?

I love all the seasons, lols. But of course I chose Season 7 for obvious reasons. :)  But if I had to be honest with myself and choose the best top 5 of all the seasons, it would have to be Season 7 again, haha.  Season 8 is in a close second as well as Season 5 but every season had it's fodders.

JulieBarbara

@ArchieSue It's funny, Season 7 had my all-time favorite contestant, David Archuleta, and it's the only season that I went to the tour. But I still can't say Season 7 had the best top 5 because I really couldn't stand David Cook and Jason Castro, and I didn't much care for Brooke White at the time (now I think she's pretty cool though). Syesha was a great singer but left me cold for the most part. Yet I HAD to go to the tour to see my Archie. Waited outside the arena for 2 hours just to meet him and get his autograph, lol. Also got to meet most of the top 10, but I only really had eyes for that one...

ArchieSue
ArchieSue 5pts

@JulieBarbara Awww.... I love Cookie, Castro and Brooke too but of course Archie is my favorite.  :)  Syesha in a way is kind of like Jessica, they can both sing technically well but there isn't most emotion. However I do have to give Jessica props because she is getting better.

So happy that Archie has over a million twitter followers now. Lets hope a fraction of them will buy his stuff when he comes back from his mission. Regardless he is my favorite all time idol and I buy everything he puts out. He is the only one that I have invested a lot of money in really.  I do own a few albums from some of the other idols.

So which season would be the BEST then Julie, in your opinion? Season 8 was incredible too minus Gokey but he did give us that hilarious "scream heard around the world" when he did "Dream On", that was a moment I will never forget. lols.   :)

@Airaheta1fan Yeah, he sure does! Every single year, he says this is the most talented group of contestants EVER. It's all about the hype. And yet, it seems like the bar gets lower and lower every year, with the judges doling out standing ovations like they're going out of style. I remember a time when the judges almost never did that, when Simon was around - HE only stood up for established superstar guests for the most part. Did he ever stand up for a contestant? Maybe once or twice?

Another day, another grossly subjective post from Rickey regarding Idol.

None of my top favorites are still in and I still think this is one of the best Top 5's we've had.

It would probably be the best Top 5 if one-trick pony Phillip wasn't there.

Season 11 is leading in your poll... but I think there might be some extreme bias going on because of it being the most recent season, and because, well, you know, Jessica Sanchez.  But lets be honest with ourselves.  Season 8 held: Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, and Allison Iraheta.  If those 3 had of been the Top 3, viewers might have drained America of all its electricity attempting to watch.

I agree.  I don't think this poll will ever be accurate because people have a tendency to seek out the site (or tune in to Rickey.org) when they are really following the current season.  So... next year, next year will also be the Best Top 5 on American Idol EVER! - as well.

I'm actually gonna have to put on my big fat disagreement hat, which seems very fitting since I'm going in alone here:

I've watched Idol since the get-go. I don't remember how old I was but I was hitting puberty when Kelly Clarkson won so I know a thing or two like the best of them. In each season, by the time you hit the top 5, you had at least 2 very weak links, a middling person, a somewhat unanimous idol and one one superemely great singer.

Season 1 had a mockery of contestants with only a handful that could really be considered Idols (Clarkson, Gray and Christina Christianson). Season 2 was the same, but stepped up it's game with Ruben, Clay and Kimberly. Trenyce was also a hit and miss performer with serious skill.

It wasn't until season 3 that we actually started making a well rounded cast of singers where the midcard performers could turn out moments of their own but still go home at any time. Fantasia and Latoya were brilliant. Diana was a hit or miss and Jasmine Trias, while controversial and somewhat flat on a majority of her performances, she was still able to turn out one of the best semi-final performances in the shows history. Who was number 5? Wasn't Jennifer Hudson cause she still had a lot of work to do. It was George Huff. Another middling, hit or miss guy.

Season 4 saw Carrie Underwood and Bo Bice battle it out with both of them having severe talent on opposite ends of the spectrum as Carrie was a performer and Bo was the singer. Vonzell and Anthony were hit and miss with Scott Savol rolling through like a barrel of Philip Philips trying to bitch slap us all.

Season 5 was the biggest hit and miss season of them all. All of the top 12 had talent (even Pickler), but the top 5 had some serious moments on Idol. Take Kat McPhee who could have a disastrous Elvis Presley Week and a brilliant moment in "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" the next. Even Daughtry found himself as an outstanding contestant the first half of the season but somewhat middling in the second. Elliot Yamin was the male Melinda Doolittle and Taylor Hicks was a middling but accomplished winner. Lets not forget Paris too. All five of these contestants (save for Yamin) had trainwrecks though.

Season 6 was for me, the worst season on record. People like to talk about season 9 like it's somethin' but were it not for Melinda Doolittle, this seasons would have crashed and burned. Yes, Jordan had "I Who Have Nothing" but little else could be taken away from season 6 without the term, "A grain of salt". The rest of the top 5 in that season? Blake Lewis, Lakisha Jones and Chris effin' Richardson. Enough said (Lakisha had her moments but Chris most certainly did not and Blake was another Middling performer).

Season 7 is the advent for a lot of people. It's my favorite season and I would content that it has one of the strongest top 5 if not THE strongest but they had no Carly Smithson. David Cook is a celebrated contestant and so is David Archuleta but Archie had a trainwreck and a half. The first being in the top 12 week where he forgot his lyrics. The half being his father and all the tabloid crap it stirred up. Syesha, who went out at #3, didn't start revving up her game until the second half of the season (though I loved her take on "Yesterday" in the second Beatles week as well as "If I were Your Woman"). Brooke had several outstanding performances but some lackluster ones as well. Same for Jason Castro. Both had more good than bad though.

Season 8 had Danny Gokey which pretty much ruins almost all of its credibility. With season 8, the beginning of the end on the judge's panel happened. Danny got amazing praise that he didn't deserve and he made it to the top 3 and took Allison's spot. Matt Giraud rounded out the top 5 and say what you will but he was as middling as they come. Allison, Adam and Kris however and some of the single most talented contestants to hit the stage though and they are a force to be reckoned with but toss in Gokey and, well...lets not think of it.

Do we need to talk about season 9?

Season 10 was another useless year with the judges. The further you went in the more useless they got, giving us the likes of Jacob Lusk and a severely mediocre winner in Scotty McCreery. I'm not a fan of Lauren Alaina but she was definitely as talented as they come. Could have used a few more years. James Durbin, while having several outstanding performances, was the victim of useless advice from the judges, reverting back to so-so and lamer performances by top 4 when he was supposedly the victim of a "Shock-Elimination" when the truth is, the shining light in season 10, Haley Reinhart, kicked his ass. But that was it. Reinhart.

So now we're down the to the top 5 in season 11 with a frenetic Skylar, Humble Hollie, Soulful Jessica, Belty Joshua and Acoustic Philip. Lets get the bad out of the way first: Philip is a trainwreck in his own right. Brit night was an unholy alliance of Philip killing us softly with his song, telling our whole lives with his word, killing us softly....with his song. But he has shown that he can have some exceptional performances here and there. "In the Air Tonight" I would argue was the only one but I think more would agree that "You Got It Bad" was another. Besides that he has ranged from middling to atrocious, without a knack for melody and nary a range in sight. But again, this is as bad as it gets.

Taking a look at the rest of the field, they're as even as they come. Skylar had her limits, reaching them precisely at the wrong time in top 6 and top 5 week but shining like a lighthouse with "Where do Broken Hearts Go", "Wind Beneath My Wings", and a moment my eyes in "Didn't you Know How Much I Loved You". She was middling to exceptional.

Joshua, who's taken Jacob Lusk and grinded him into a more perfect version of himself, does have a tendency to oversing on some songs but there's no denying the raw talent there. His "When a Man Loves a Woman" is a much loved track from this season. Other notable performances have been "Ready for Love", "Runaway Baby", and "To Love Somebody".

Jessica, who has the range of old Whitney, has a lot of soul and the greatest potential in my opinion. She's shown that she can step into big shoes with "I Will Always Love You", be current with "Stuttering" and turn old ballads into enjoyable things of the present in "Dance with My Father" and "You are So Beautiful".

Lastly there's Hollie whom many find "Inconsistent". It's no secret that I love her but I'll turn my fantard off for this one analysis: She had a bad run in the middle but I would argue that the inconsistency there was about song selection and not about her talent. Billy Joel week was a mistake for everyone (though Elise had a notable "Vienna") and she really messed up with the whole "Personal Idols" and choosing "Flashdance" thing. To pick Carrie Underwood and then take one of her biggest songs that even Gokey douched all over almost turned me off of her. But I stuck with her and these last few weeks she's turned out some superb selections in both "Bleeding Love" and "The Climb". She had a serious introduction too with a well sung "Reflection" a superb "All the Man that I Need" and a great "Power of Love". Song selection just damned her in the middle.

Looking at that, I would go as far as to agree with Randy. This is the best top 5 ever if only because they are the most consistently well performed group since the show began, not to mention that it's not over yet. That we still have 3 more weeks to create moments or destroy that sentiment. Adding to that assessment is "Whatnottosing" that contends it's actually the "Top 7" this season (that would mean Colton and Elise are included) is comparable to the top 4 of season 8 and the top 6 of season 7. I would agree with that. Music is just so subjective and so is Idol. I'll give season 11 one more thing and that it's about as out of the ordinary as can be. There have been so many changes that it's hard to think about them and compare to past seasons but we must remember that as each season goes on, we're all looking for more in each contestant. That each season, the contestants become way more polarizing because the fans are becoming much more demanding of what they want from each person. Regardless of whether you think this is the best top 5 there is no denying the talent that comes from them. It's a good group and definitely rests among the best :]

JulieBarbara
JulieBarbara 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@takakupo Wow, I thoroughly agree with practically everything in your well-thought-out comments. My only problem is, I think Season 8's top 5 might have been slightly better than this one. Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta were two of the all-time best singers on Idol, plus I actually liked Matt Giraud - he had some standout moments like "Who's Lovin' You," which got him a wildcard slot. I know most people hated Danny Gokey but he had a FEW decent moments and I actually liked his version of "What Hurts the Most." Kris Allen didn't do much for me though.

Whereas this season, only 1 person in the top 5 will end up being an all-time favorite of mine, and that's Jessica. Phillip doesn't do much for me and neither did Skylar. Hollie isn't very versatile but I do love her when she picks the right songs, like "The Climb." Joshua is a very good singer but I only really like him on uptempo songs like "Runaway Baby" and "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," when he doesn't have the chance to wail his head off for half the song. So idk, for me Season 11 has only the second-best top 5.

JulieBarbara
JulieBarbara 5pts

@vjwilkinson Wow, didn't think anyone would agree with me on Season 8, especially about Danny. I really did enjoy some of his performances, "Come Rain or Come Shine" being one of his best. I loved "What Hurts the Most," especially the studio version - he really connected with that song after losing his wife. But yeah, he made some pretty awful song choices that turned into train wrecks at times.

vjwilkinson
vjwilkinson 5pts like.author.displayName 1 Like

@JulieBarbara Season 8 definitely had the best top 5 of the seasons I watched (7-11). Loved Kris and really liked the other four. Danny's "Come Rain or Come Shine" was one of my all-time favorite Idol performances. Some of Danny's other song choices were not so good.

@Lombe Thank you :] I wish more people would agree. If anything has come from the disaster of season 9 and the departure of Simon it's that the judges and the producers have done a good job of finally putting through serious contenders in the top 24 and letting America decide. The failure is that they have their favorites and want them to win so it becomes about how much they can manipulate to get what they want.

Haha, this also goes to show that someone can have their moments and still deserve to be fired XD Can't wait till they replace Randy.

The voting system is broken and has an easy fix. The show is only getting more polarizing. It's also showing some innovation but really needs to reach for the stars if it wants its next Carrie Underwood. The only way to get that is to introduce us to the new Simon Cowell (and I'm not talking about the nicer X-Factor Simon. I mean a the old Simon that knew how to be cold and get shit done and improve his contestants). Fixing these things while retaining what works from the current template can produce a top 5 that will be better than any of the past 11 without question ^__^

@Lombe Those are all extreme examples. There may be an extremist element in many fanbases, which is annoying - but it's when a majority of a fanbase, and they are so rabid they are not reflective in their fanaticism, then that's what I mean. I haven't been to the scaryboards much for the last few seasons - but you cannot possibly look at Jessica's fan's behaviour as the same as say, HeeJun's, Deandre's, Skylar's, etc.

Jessica is talented. It's really her stage mother (who they are keeping under wraps and showed that hilarious Brielle's mother instead as a red herring) and her OBNOXIOUS fantards who will do her in. I see her doing okay in the Philippines and that's about it. She'll probably do okay for a few years then fade away like most of them.

Maybe its because of an article I saw Michael Slezak write a few weeks ago suggesting the same Idea, but Randy may be right to an extent. I'll be honest. I only started watching Idol religiously in season 7, so I'm probably not in the best position to make a judgement on this one. But judging from the countless hours of Youtube Videos, I've seen of Past Idol Contestants(Season 1-7) I would say this is in the Top 4. If Phillip and Hollie had been eliminated earlier, and Skylar and Elise were still in it, I would have placed it higher !

He did a similar poll to yours, and Season 11 of AI came out on top(Barely), and with TV Line.com, I dont think you can blame it on Filipino Voting Bloc, that regularly Hijack your polls.
