The photo recap of Person of Interest – Season 2 Episode 20 – In Extremis:
Hey guys! Welcome to another recap of Person of Interest. Did you enjoy tonight’s long-awaited episode of POI? In the previous two episodes, we lost Detectives Shemansky and Cal Beecher (Sterling K. Brown) due to HR’s reckless behavior. Unfortunately, we lost another individual tonight… but it wasn’t a recurring character. Read on to find out who exactly that individual was.
Episode 20 kicked off with a flashback to 2011. In this flashback, it seemed like Detective Fusco (Kevin Chapman) had just murdered somebody since he was frantically trying to bury the victim’s body. This wasn’t the case, however. (Never judge a book by its cover). Fast forward to 2013: Fusco’s past relationship with Detective Stills came back to haunt him. He spent the majority of the episode defending himself against the disappearance/murder of Detective Stills, while confessing a secret so dark that Detective Carter (Taraji P. Henson) could not call him a friend anymore.
Later in the episode, we met this week’s person of interest in Dr. Richard Nelson. Reese (Jim Caviezel) pretended to be a server at an awards ceremony in which Nelson was a recipient of. Little did Nelson know that his water had been spiked with radiation poisoning – not by Reese, but by one of his colleagues. Unfortunately, Reese wasn’t able to prevent Nelson’s water from being spiked because he arrived after the fact. A few hours later, Nelson began displaying the symptoms of radiation poisoning, including nosebleeds, hair loss, coughing up blood, paling of skin, failing eyesight, etc. He phoned 911, and Reese later introduced himself to Nelson inside the hospital.
Then, Reese informed Nelson that he only has 24 hours to live and that he should say his goodbyes to his daughter, Molly. Dr. Nelson did meet up with Molly, but he didn’t inform her of his radiation poisoning. Later, Nelson let Reese know that he might’ve let something slip from his lips when he was intoxicated. A few days prior, he told one of his patients – Brandon Boyd – that the drug trial was about to fail. Boyd then relayed this information to his boss, Vincent Cochran — who is a multi-billionaire. Cochran’s company, VAC Capital, lost half a billion dollars thereafter. This enormous loss of money angered Cochran so much so that he decided to slowly murder Dr. Nelson. Cochran was able to spike Nelson’s water during the ceremony (which took place earlier that day).
In an attempt to avenge his murder, Nelson and Reese drove over to Cochran’s mansion, and spiked his drink as well. Reese, yet again, pretended to be a waiter… and he served Cochran a spiked alcoholic drink. Then, Cochran began displaying the same symptoms as those of Nelson’s. Nelson passed away the morning after.
The virus that Kara Stanton (Annie Parisse) had created in a previous episode leaked into The Machine. Needless to say, there is definitely something wrong with The Machine… and Finch (Michael Emerson) is doing everything he can to fix it.
Also in this episode, Detective Carter, Detective Fusco, Officer Simmons of HR (Robert John Burke), Quinn of HR (Clarke Peters), and more attended Detective Cal Beecher’s funeral.
The other big story of the episode was regarding Detective Fusco’s relationship with the missing Detective Stills. Internal Affairs dropped by the police office to interrogate Fusco on this matter. Back in 2004, Fusco used to work for HR Homicide, and Stills worked for HR Narcotics. They were both dirty cops at the time and they killed other people for sport. This past history led Internal Affairs to believe that Fusco had something to do with the disappearance of Detective Jimmy Stills. Fusco spent the better part of the episode defending himself, while swearing to Internal Affairs and to Carter that he had nothing to do with Stills’ disappearance/death. After Fusco confessed to killing hundreds of people, Carter couldn’t even look him in the eye. She was understandably disgusted by her friend’s actions, and she also questioned Finch & Reese as to how and why they employed Fusco.
The next morning, Internal Affairs took Fusco to the scene of the crime, only to discover that the dead body had already been dug up. Fusco is off the hook for now, but who could’ve dug up the body? Was it one of Elias’ (Enrico Colantoni) employees? Was it HR? Who do you think dug up the body? Let me know in the comments below.
Lastly, Agent Shaw (Sarah Shahi) and Root (Amy Acker) are scheduled to return next week! I can’t wait for another EPIC, KICKASS episode! Whenever Shaw and Root are in the picture, you just know the episode is going to be badass.
