Nigel Lythgoe wants Nicki Minaj back on ‘American Idol’ next season
If he had his way, Nigel Lythgoe would be bringing back Nicki Minaj as a judge on American Idol next season.
It’s really hard to read Nigel sometimes. I love Nicki Minaj and she’s arguably the best judge the show has ever had since Simon Cowell. But the loyal fans hate her on the show. A lot of fans blame her for the drop in ratings — even if it’s really Nigel’s fault for manipulating the talent pool to get a female winner this year.
What do you guys think? Should Nicki come back next season? Take the poll:
American Idol exec Nigel Lythgoe eager for Nicki Minaj to return next season
AMERICAN IDOL executive producer NIGEL LYTHGOE is eager for judge NICKI MINAJ to return to the singing competition for a second season.
The Superbass hitmaker has received mixed reviews for her stint on the show, largely in part to her blunt and sometimes harsh critiques – but despite the varying opinions of Minaj’s freshman year on Idol, Lythgoe believes she is a perfect fit for the job.
When asked if she would be welcome back for a second season, Lythoge tells TMZ.com, “By me, she certainly will be!”
Last week (27Mar13), the rapper told the three remaining boys of the competition – Lazaro Arbos, Devin Velez and Burnell Taylor – that their rendition of I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) fell flat, and added, “I’m gonna act like I didn’t see that or hear it… Get off the stage.”
She later engaged in a Twitter.com war of words with Velez after his elimination on Thursday (28Mar13). He criticized her harsh judgement about the group number, but she fired back and encouraged him to be more gracious after his departure from the show. (TD/HR&WNWCZM/CL)

Got Something to Add?
No, because the show has no identity. They need great singers as judges if they are going to oldies themes. Mariah, Aretha, and Keith or Steven Tyler or some great singing dude as judges. Pls get rid of Randy and Nikki
It seems half the people like Nicki because she tells it like it is and keeps it real and entertains.
The other half dislike her because they feel she doesn't have any business judging singers and that the idea of Nicki Minaj keeping it real is ironic.
It seems the solution would be to find another Simon. Someone who will keep it real while also being credible. Jimmy as a judge was one suggestion.
I'm not a big fan of her. Showing up late to live shows, cursing out your co-workers on the job, threatening to leave when your favorite contestant gets voted off and engaging in twitter wars with the contestants does not endear her to me.
But I get it. She is real and fierce and she gives a good sound byte in 30 seconds. It makes for great TV, especially when she calls them out on how terrible they were. I hope they figure themselves out and get those numbers up next season.
Does The Voice have a Nicki Minaj type judge? AI needs to take some notes from them.
150 percent YES!!! she is one of the best things about this season...she has clearly upset conservative America ....but if they actually open their ears she has been a breath of fresh air......and I find myself almost ALWAYS agreeing with what she says...blunt and to the point but as I continue to say many Americans "cant handle an honest woman" and thats the whole problem here....I like Keith alot too :)
Nicki Minaj is one of the few reasons to watch the show this season, so I would hope they would want to bring her back. Randy should be banished, and Mariah is as useless as can be. Thankfully, Keith is eye-candy, for his opinions are fairly bland.
No Nicki next year.... Keith, Maria, ???? of course Randy-- yet I prefer someone else then Randy but the POWERS TO BE...will have Randy back.
Nicki is tough and like Simon yet, I like someone else who tough but not her...
Been saying it since Simon left..they need Jimmy Iovine to be a judge, like NOW. As to the show failing this year - it's on Nigel himself. You tried too hard for a diverse group, and in the process stacked the deck against the guys. All 5 were WELL below the usual talent pool. This has been the worst season on idol, bar none.
As a loyal AI viewer and fan for all seasons since 2, I think Idol made a huge error in stacking the top ten for the girls. I believe they deliberately elimated the WGWG and picked five mediocre guys. They are going to be left with five females, its going to continue to drop in ratings. HUGE mistake but you WILL get your female winner.
@MauiKane So what was the point in commenting - and even in reading the article - you waste all of our time as well as your own
@DeniseBooth the lack of a strong male period....is a big problem this season...having said that I think Lazaro is gonna upset the apple cart......judging by what I see on other blogs....his fan followings on various sites is also very high ranking only under front runner Angie....it all depends on how they order the contestants the next few eeks.....the girls have had a monopoly on the final spot it seems......watch to see if Lazaro or Burnell get tossed first or last!
@Mikhail XO I agree - I tape the show and watch it later - the only 2 judges I listen to are Nicki and Keith - I fast forward Randy and Mariah. I have never liked Randy and find Mariah is all about "look at me - I'm the star" - definitely keep Nicki cos she tells it how it is which is what they need.
@amandanoa @MauiKane I have watched American Idol for many years and I was once a great fan. I was merely expressing my displeasure for the declining quality of the show. Last I checked, this is America, and I am still entitled to have an opinion about something that I have experienced ..as do you.
Since I feel that I am exercising my right to read articles on Rickey's website, as I do daily, and then form my opinions, I do not feel that I have wasted my time. You can choose not to read my comment or, having read it, choose to ignore my opinion. By making such a choice, you will not waste YOUR time. Needless to say, that choice is available to other readers as well.
@amandanoa @MauiKane At the risk of repeating myself...Rickey's forum is set up so that readers are able to express their opinions .. negative as well as positive. My responses are merely that .. my opinions; not shout outs or declarations to "the world."
Your annoyance at what I have written is your right, and I do not have a problem with that. What is problematic, however, is your assumptions about the purpose and perspective of my responses.
I am not being condescending or critical of other people who have differing opinions, and you have no evidence from what I have written to support those assertions. You are ascribing intentions and interpretations to my responses that are simply unsubstantiated.
