Nigel Lythgoe: ‘American Idol 12 judges don’t have chemistry’

American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe just openly threw this season’s judges under the bus. He told Zap2It that he’s worried about the lack of chemistry of Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson on the panel.

“I don’t think we have good chemistry with the judges,” he said. “I miss the camaraderie we have had in the past.”

American Idol exec Nigel Lythgoe attests judges lack chemistry

AMERICAN IDOL executive producer NIGEL LYTHGOE has agreed with the show’s many critics and confessed this season’s batch of judges lack the chemistry and camaraderie the panel members have had in the past.

The hit singing competition has undergone a few line-up changes in recent years, but incoming panelists have always been able to get along. However, it has been clear since auditions began on the current season that Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey and Idol veteran Randy Jackson don’t always get along – and tensions have reached boiling point at times.

Now Lythgoe tells entertainment news site Zap2it.com that he and the other producers are just as worried about the apparent lack of chemistry as fans and critics of Idol.

He admits, “For me it is a bit like a jigsaw puzzle that doesn’t quite fit… I don’t think we have good chemistry with the judges. And that saddens me. They are good individually, but I miss the camaraderie we have had in the past.”

And Lythgoe insists that he adores each of the judges individually, but the panel was doomed from the start thanks to the feud between Minaj and Carey that began during the initial auditions last year (12).

He adds, “That (feud) got off to a bad start and that didn’t help anything. The guys themselves are, goodness me, I don’t think you could find two nicer men. Randy is loved by America, and Keith is the nicest man you could hope to meet. Individually, every single one of them has something to offer.”

Fans appear to be so uninterested in the feuds, they are turning Idol off – now in its 12th season, the show has become a victim of falling ratings since its premiere in January (13). (TD/WNWCAZ/KL)

Umm Nikki spices up the panel so letting her go would be a mistake, boring MAriah and Randy need to exit.  AI is still OK, you can't expect a 10 yr old program to maintain huge ratings year after year.. It is still profitable and still creates artists that actually sell albums and singles (which can't be said with The Voice and X Factor).

He's an idiot if he thinks the judges are the problem. Get real...you rigged this season's contestants with complete garbage...that is why the show is un-interesting.

The little bit of Idol I've seen this year, I actually liked the judges. I thought the judge changes were supposed to make the show better? And that Mariah/Nicki feud (please get rid of Nicki ASAP), I thought according the Nigel that didn't happen? He needs to really pick a story & stick with it.

I like how when Paula and Simon were going crazy over each other, it was so over-the-top and made it about the judges instead of the contestants and now that the Voice has shown a prescient awareness of the quirky working relationships between young 30 and 20 something judges, it's all cool again to have them interacting in crazy ways.

We need another Simon and Paula and a negative one of Randy and Nygel L.

He messed up the Season to begin with, with his lame Vegas week Boys and Girls, the most off-putting thing about this season its the complete manipulation hes been doing since vegas just to have a girl winning, now that hes got it its to late to solve the problem.. what a coward for blaming it on the judges. i hate him.

Nick Minaj: if they got rid of Nicki and kept the other three judges, I would stop watching...she's the only thing that's consistently entertaining on that show. Nicki and Keith should trade seats - Nicki and Keith as well as Randy and Mariah have chemistry in pairs, but there's a huge void in the middle of the table. The order should probably be MC, Randy, Keith, Nicki (left to right - start with vanilla and end with spice, with mixed emotions in between).

Mariah Carey: MC would be great if she would actually use her talent and experience to judge the contestants. Right now, she seems to be channeling a combination of Tinkerbell, Miss South Carolina (2007...the maps question) and Maggie Smith from Downton Abbey. I'm thinking that AI should have tried to seal the deal with Katy Perry; I can see major chemistry between her and Nicki (given her guest judging stint a few years ago).

Keith Urban: He's hot but there can only be one nice/constructive judge and Mariah Carey's rants really steal his thunder.

Randy Jackson: "Randy is loved by America"...what part of America exactly? Putting a hashtag in front of "in it to win it" does not make it less annoying.

Nicki is still the best part of the panel>>>>i dont care what conservative middle America says....shes hip concise and to the point....

The tension between Nicki and Mariah is just really uncomfortable to endure.  They never even acknowledge each other once on the show.  That's the producer's fault for not fixing that.  Why can't either one of them be forced just ONCE say... "I agree with Nicki/Mariah"  Their silent feud is just plain ridiculous and unprofessional.

@Pisto75666 Nygel definitely needed to go about 12 seasons ago. Okay, maybe just 5 or 6.

@Mikhail XO Producers need to go before sorting out the judges...

@hrstump @Mikhail XO Lol, was just thinking the same thing. We could solve the whole judges problem by eliminating the producers first! Voila!
