Until Mike sang that he was just okay for me. Now I want to hug and kiss him! I loved the way he paced the stage too! Yummmmy !

I should probably preface this by saying that my opinion of this performance is somewhat biased because I am a Maxwell fanatic. I don't think Big Mike's performance was anything to rave about let alone cry about: just listen to the audio without all the carrying-on he did on stage. Great? Unbelievable? Really? You're the one to beat? Really? Crying? Amazing? Really? So needed? Best performance of all live shows? Really? C'mon. This guy is average at best. What are the 'judges' smoking.

It's true, I don't know why it has to be 6 of each girls/guys, there were many better girls that should have been into the top 12 and fewer guys.
I can't believe they sent Lilly Scott spelling home
Most of the guys SUCK and some of the WRONG people have been sent home.
There should be maybe 3 guys and 9 girls this year

two words -- BO! RING!

good voice. good singing. good performance. maybe even a good person. but BORING recording star. he has the studdard, hicks and gokey syndrome written all over him. can win or rank high in AI? YES. showbiz career, movies, can sell lots of records, billboard top 5? HELL NO.

go home big mike.

Okay to reply to a comment earlier I actually think that the guys are a lot better than the girls this year. I mean most of the performances last night were watchable but the females on tuesday were god awful.

Ok onto big mike. From the moment I heard Ryan say big mike was gonna sing Maxwell I knew what song it would be and I was like nooooooooo. No one should ever attempt Maxwell. Seriously! Big mike did a decent enough job but if u listen to Maxwell sing this and hear what the song is supposed to sound like and what that falsetto is supposed to sound like, big mike's version will pale in comparison. I feel as though there are just some artists that should not be attempted on American idol and maxwell and especially THIS SONG is one of them.

This performance was incredibly overrated. He has a good voice, but that is it. He is way too fat and ugly and it isn't clear who this guy would appeal to. He's not cool enough to be an R&B singer and isn't believable doing pop or rock.

Bottom line is NOBODY would buy his albums. His performances are mediocre because his voice doesn't outweigh his disgusting appearance and total lack of charisma.

EVERY other male contestant on this show will sell more albums than this clown. Lambert has a legit radio voice and marketable image. No chance in hell this guy makes top 6 or even gets a record deal. The enormous praise was completely unfounded.

love the song and he sang it good but i still dont like this guy. I'm sick of his wife and his child and his neverending backstory, geez get over it already. The child has been born so move on! He is like the Danny Gokey of this season. Same cockiness. I hate it when he does that finger sign and he pout his mouth at the same time.

Sorry, but didn't get the song! I think the judge was just trying to get more votes for him. Kara one lousy actress.

I find the judges comments interesting but only that. So often I apparently was listening to a different performance. Ellen even referred to the difference between live and when they play it back later. Lilly night before last to me was just OK if that, but they loved her. Siobhan has the best pipes of the girls but they didn't give her any props. I really like Crystal!
But big Mike really delivered. A beautiful song well sung. Tender then strong. He worked it.
I think Kara's response was absolutely genuine. If you've never heard a piece of music or seen a performance that moved you like that, that's a shame.

I was crying too,,,because it was painful to watch! He is just to large a man to be moving around like that 'n the singing wasn't all that! I agree with what Simon said about who will win this year, a girl.

this Michael Lynche isn't good at all. Nobody would buy his songs. just another joke like Ruben . why r the judges promoting this guys so much. does anybody remember RUben Studard or? he was a joke but he won because he is black. what a waste

Big Mike’s performance was GREAT and needed, like Simon said in reference to what he believed Ellen said. It was not as WOWING as the judges made it out to be. I believed it seemed WOWING to them because everyone before Mike sung a slow, monotone and boring song while sitting with their guitar.

We already have Ruben, did we need this? I wasn’t impressed by his falsetto. He worked the stage though. I liked him much more in a prior week. He should be in the Top 12 but this wasn’t his best performance.

As far as do we need another RUBEN….. Well, I really didn’t understand what you were referring to. Big Mike and RUBEN had 2 distinct voices and styles in their performances. RUBEN had more of a gospel sound whereas Big Mike had more of a soulful, Motown sound. Big Mike had way more soul and movement than RUBEN did. I’ll put it to you this way, RUBEN knew how to sing a song. Big Mike knew how to sing and FINESSE a song.

I thought this was excellent. The falsetto was weird for me till I youtubed Kate Bush and Maxwell’s version. I actually like that Big Mike’s voice is richer in this song than theirs. Did Simon really say this was the best performance he’s ever heard on Idol ever??!! That’s a bit over the top, but as he’d say “It’s just an opinion!” Best performance of the night, for sure.

Simon did not say that Big Mike’s performance was the best on American Idol ever. You sound just like the media. Putting your own spin on what someone else said. He said that Mike’s performance I quote, “It’s the best performance we’ve had of all these live shows so far”. If Simon had said what you wondered he said, I would have agreed with you 100%. Mike’s performance was not the best performance on Idol ever. Personally, my best performances on idol were from contestants who did not win.

That first note scared me - it was so high and off pitch but then he recovered nicely . The falsetto still seemed a little too forced and unnatural , but what do I know ??

I still thoguht it was onviosuly a very solid performance and he does now how to work the stage - must be all that drama and stage training he talked about so he IS an entertainer .

I did not see a single tear in Kara's eye - I liked her the first season but she is really getting on my last nerve . She is so critical and the same STUPID comments like she has a clue what she is talking about . She seems like a phony to me .

Just saw Reuben on Wendy's show, a clip from MJ's and he was very very good....the song was very very good....could be a big hit if it gets radio play....but I think Mike would blow him out of the water.

If Mike advances to the top 5, he'll be under the management of 19R, and 19R has never known what to do with black artists. They've all left the management team (exc. Reuben).

Marie Ruffin

To amber: Frankly, all this guitar strumming is tedius and desperate. Jason Castro's only talent is writing songs and wearing dreadlocks. As a singer he's so-so, but I find most of the Idols so-so singers. And thanks to Idol, they have a career. They can do movies, write music, record and tour.

Ruehl
Ruehl

He has the best vocals of the guys, for sure. I thought he sounded good and I was enjoying it ..up until he started bouncing around. The hopping and the kicking was too much. I understand how singers can get when they sing strong, emotional songs, but it just didn't seem appropriate for this song.

BlackDenim
BlackDenim

I don't think it was THAT good other than that long note he held.

And no, Crystal is STILL in the lead followed closely by Siobhan, Michael is not even on the radar. He'll have one bad performance and will be voted off eventually as he is not likable and is so dramatic which is disturbing.

Kristina

Ah, that was beautiful. Really very nice and how cool to pick this song with a baby on the way.

You gave some misinformation on this song though, Rickey. This song is not "by" Maxwell, although he did a really nice interpretation of it (as did Michael) and I'm sure that's how most people know it nowadays.

The original is by Kate Bush and it's a very powerful song. It has a lot to do with the simplicity of her arrangement, the crescendo of the music and her voice, relating the transition from sadness into frustration and anger near the end, and then the fade back to resignation and simple hope once that emotion has spent itself. She sings and arranges her songs not just as a singer but also as a storyteller, which is why her version has something in it that the covers end up missing.

As a Kate Bush fan, though, I really think Maxwell and Michael did a nice job in their interpretations of the song. The talent there is fantastic, no doubt about that! :-) As simple as it sounds, this is Not an easy song to cover.

Big Mike was HOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT! Whoever didn't get Kara's reaction obviously don't know what the song's about. One of the best songs ever written. I also enjoyed his performance last week, too! Bravo Mike!

I like Mike and the difficulty level of the song is freakin' huge... However, I can't get Bowersox, singing Give Me One Reason, out of my head. Mike may be a threat, but Crystal's hands down the standout of this year. Difference between her and Lambert of last year, she has numerous freakin' kickass notes in her vocal range... Adam had the 80's scream.

bruinlove

Okay so I am going to say it! I think that we don't give enough credit to the African-american singers simply because we EXPECT they will be good which is totally unfair! Mike's performance was aweeeeesoooooommee but I think we just expect it from him and hold him to a higher standard. For the guy that said, "didn't we already have a Ruben?" WTF? So if one of the white girls sings should we say, "didn't we already have a Kelly Clarkson" or if a gay guy wins or sings should we then say "Didn't we already have an Adam Lambert?" No right? That would be stupid just like saying we already have a Ruben is dumb. Mike is not trying to be Ruben he is trying to be Mike! Seriously if he was not black (ie: white) and those vocals would have come out of there we would be saying he was AMAZING! Oh and for those that think I am playing the race card....I am not even black! I hate people that use the race card but this was just an observation. Credit is due when it is deserved and Big Mike deserved the praise. Now, he is a little cocky, I will give you that so I can see how he is not liked BUT we are talking about his voice here and that was good whether you want to admit it or not....there I said it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a lot of hate here for Mike...while I agree the song was definitely overpraised..such has been the case with everything that Bowersox has sung to date. So if we are hating on Mike I hope that hate is going both ways!

My assumption is that the judges are trying VERY HARD to hype people like Mike and Crystal because, in all honesty, this is a very LACKLUSTER, dull and uninspired group they have put together and I say this as a giant Andrew Garcia fan, who was pretty silly tonight by the way. They have to overhype these folks else the public just might find other programming for the next few months because this top 12 doesn't look that good.

He can step into Luther's footsteps....we've been needing a soul brother singer on the scene and with Maxwell coming back and Anthony Hamilton and Neyo, Mike can join the team!

The Fan

This guy is legit! He is versatile and that's what it takes to win. He can play the guitar but he can also just drop the instrument, take the mic and SING and that's what I see lacking from guys like Andrew Garcia, Casey James, and even everyone's favorite Lee Dewyze. I feel like sometimes, the instrument masks a contestant's singing...they could be very pitchy and not have a very impressive vocal performance but it gets hidden behind their instrument-playing.

It's good to play an instrument on Idol every now and then to show your overall artistry but to rely on it every week gets tiring. Even Kris Allen mixed it up with some different types of performances. I feel like this season, we have too many Jason Castros and it gets boring.

Ya know, I hate these stupid comments about Adam Lambert's "screaming." He is a contra tenor--that means he doesn't use falsetto or head tones alone when singing notes in his upper range, he uses an even blend of chest and head tones. This takes enormous training and skill, and very few men can do this. And his pitch and control are always true. This only comes from years of training. Anybody can scream. 99.9999% of people cannot do what he does.
I loved Big Mike's performance and honestly don't get all the hate I'm reading here. He showed excellent vocal control and passion as well. It was a beautiful thing. He is not my favorite, but I give him the night because he really was the best.
Also, comparing Crystal to Adam Lambert is another mistake, IMO. Siobhan is a better comparison.
