The former Friends and Go On television star has opened up about his issues with addiction and road to sobriety in the latest issue of People.
During the approximate ten years of filming Friends, many on the outside looking in would have assumed Perry was celebrating a high point in his life. On the contrary, in a statement to People, Perry reveals the true nature of his time on Friends.
It was actually a very lonely time for me because I was suffering from alcoholism. It was going on before ‘Friends,’ but it’s a progressive disease… I had a big problem with pills and alcohol, and I couldn’t stop.
Eventually, Perry reached a breaking point. Following several years of battling through crippling hangovers while filming (Perry never actually worked while under the influence), the actor decided to come clean about his disease. Following two separate stints in rehab, Matthew Perry is living happily as a sober man.
I finally got it. Something clicked… You have to want the help. You have to be willing to change.
What’s next for Perry? Following the cancellation of Go On, he has different plans in mind.
I’d love to start a family. I think I’d make a great dad, and I think shortly I would make a great husband.
