Matthew Goode has committed himself to religion. At least for TV.
The Watchmen star has signed on for Showtime’s upcoming drama pilot The Vatican, a thriller focused on the power and politics of spirituality, set against the backdrop of modern-day struggles within the Catholic church.
Goode will play Bernd Koch, a name that has to be a rib on somebody. Koch is the pope’s closest confidante, a papal secretary firmly ensconced in the pontiff’s inner circle.
The series has a considerable creative pedigree, as Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco, House) penned the pilot script, while blockbuster film director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Black Hawk Down) has signed on to direct his very first television pilot. Attanasio and Scott will executive produce the Sony Pictures Television project alongside The Good Wife’s David Zucker.
Production on the series is expected to begin soon.
