Per boston.com, BMI chief Del Bryant presented Carey with the music-rights organization’s Icon Award for her outstanding songwriting that has resulted in 18 No. 1 singles and more than 200 million albums sold. Bryant called her ‘‘an unparalleled musical superstar’’ and ‘‘the greatest singer in history.’’
He also praised her new role as American Idol judge saying, ‘‘Who knows more about musical artistry and song selection than Mariah Carey?”
Carey thanked the performers for honoring her with their performances of her songs and said, ‘‘I’m so humbled by this moment because a lot of people still don’t know I write my own songs.”
Potential fellow Idol judge Nicki Minaj was also honored, but did not attend the awards.
I can’t say Mariah Carey is the first name to come to mind when I think of “urban music,” but congratulations to her on the award. I actually didn’t know that she writes her own songs and while I’m not a huge fan of her material, there’s no denying she has an incredible voice.
