Jennifer Hudson: “American Idol should bow out gracefully”

Music · American Idol 12 · Jennifer Hudson

In an interview with Celebuzz, Jennifer Hudson said that American Idol should “allow itself to go out on top… and gracefully.”

What a novel idea! If FOX decides to end American Idol this season, then they can truly claim that they have made stars — without their legacy being tarnished with diminishing returns year after year.

Hopefully it happens — so Idol can go out with a bang as a legend! It’s been a shadow of its old self for many years now and it looks like it’s not going to get better with some of the audience reaction to Nicki Minaj on the panel.

From THR:

Speaking to Celebuzz at a Los Angeles event promoting her new film, The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, the Oscar winner said that the program “should allow itself to go out on top…and gracefully.”

“Everything has its time,” said the Dreamgirls star, who said she still has a soft spot for the show that first introduced her to the public.

“American Idol has changed the face of television,” she said. “So, not everyone can say that. And it’s always been a phenomenon. I’m proud to have come from American Idol, so I just say, go out on top.”

The ultra-popular "The Voice" should have let them know that it's not about the judges! It's about the contestants! The serious ones - not the weirdo goofballs that waste their, our and everyone's time!

I disagree with Jennifer.  Idol still has legs and can go on for many many more years. Scotty and PP are doing fine for the franchise right now. No way should idol go out now when they are still relevant in my opinion. Plus idol is like a drug that I have to have every year and if I don't get it, I feel empty.  I hope idol will go on for another 12 years.  Long live American Idol! Still my FAVORITE singing competition show!  :)  I don't get the same feeling with the other shows. They are great too but idol is SPECIAL in my opinion.

@ArchieSue fully agree with you. Although after S9,I was beginning to get bored year after year. It's not like it used to,for sure. I'm ambivalent about Idol,if they stop the show right now,I'm going to feel empty. But if they continue the show,I'm afraid I don't have the energy anymore to dedicate 4-5 months of my life every year for Idol. LMAO.

@J@M That's 2 in the 12 seasons it's been on. And Jhud became a star because of her Oscar, not Idol.

@Rickey @J@M well if she did not join idol she would have not been cast in that dreamgirls movie

@hrstump @jiggamang @J@M American Idol should follow the footsteps of another show which is no longer on the air: Star Search.

Star Search discovered: Beyonce, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Adam Sandler, Alanis Morissette, Usher, Sharon Stone, Ray Romano, Rosie O'Donnell and even contestants who joined Idol like David Archuleta, Diana DeGarmo and Jessica Sierra.

We must continue to debunk this Idol PR BS.

@jiggamang @Rickey @J@M Well, if she were just offered the role after she was booted off the show, fine, but she went to an audition just like many others. Idol didn't get her in the door, her agent did.

@Rickey @J@M I disagree and agree with you both.  Let's face it, JHud and Latoya London's names both got out there because of American Idol but it is their talent that continues to get them out there.

And ultimately, it is their talents that got them into American Idol to begin with.

@J@M Not true. And totally unfair to Jennifer. That's like saying the only reason LaToya London was cast in the touring cast of the Color Purple in Chicago in a supporting role was because she was on American Idol.

They need to keep Keith , bring back Steven Tyler ,somehow con Mick Jagger and Gene Simmons on the panel and there ya go..

Glad to know one of Idol's big names thinks the same way I do. Hopefully the people at FOX will take her advice and bring the show to a close at the magic number 12.

This is season 12. I agree with Jennifer. They should go out while they still have somewhat of an audience rather than allowing itself to fizzle and be cancelled.

Yes, it's time to end it. how long are they planning to go on. it's been 10 or 11 years now, I can't remember how many years now exactly, it's time to go and come up with something new, maybe Randy can start something new.

Jayne Marquit

NO, I don't agree and she should keep her opinions to herself.
