James Durbin – Change is Gonna Come – The Second Coming of Adam Lambert!
OMG! James Durbin sounds exactly like Adam Lambert! AMAZING!
He sang A Change is Gonna Come for his final performance before the American Idol Green Line. Great casting from Nigel Lythgoe. James is quite a find. Amazing.

Got Something to Add?
I bet you are eating your words, seeing as he made it to the Top 4. Howver, I believe he should have progressed to the Top 2 and subsequently taking home the title. Clearly James Durbin is the most talented this season, and in my opinion? One of the best contestants ever appearing on Idol.
Ricky are you serious? James sings exactly like Adam? Sorry there is no comparison I wish James had more control over his voice but I think he'll be in top 10 as he's got the sympathy vote and he's likeable by the viewers.
I like James but he murdered ACIGC what the heck? What is he trying to do out sing Adam Lambert? Unfortunately he screamed the last part of the song. I mean really screamed almost painful to listen. No Steven he isn't soooo good. What the heck is with the judges this year? Are they searching for the 2nd coming of Adam Lambert? If so let the effort end right now cause you guys won't ever find anyone that can outsing Adam Lambert. I actually feel sorry for James cause he seems like a nice guy just trying to live up to Adam's level of talent. I wish him luck.
Durbin IS no Lambert! He does not Sing, He screams! I cannot believe that the judges put him through. Yes he has a couple of social disorder syndromes but if you're not good, you're not good!
Adam is more stylish and controlled and screams only at the climax of a song, but this guy just screams all the way through......I don't know how long he will last if he is going to scream through every song he performs....
Im wondering why my comment seemed to disappear- maybe I forgot to press "post comment".
Anyway , in case I forgot- im a fan of James Durbin. He's got something. I can't wait to see him in the next phase of AI
Um... what the hell...?
No. No. And again, no. This kid, he's cute, but he can't really sing all that well. And that song was all wrong for him. I give him points for exuberance, but seriously, he's probably not going to make it all that far, barring sympathy votes.
I hope not, though. I don't think I could stand too much of that for very long.
James Durbin sounds nothing like Adam Lambert. Adam had range, control and his assention was seemless effortless and no vocal breaks. James voices creaks and cracks and just doesn't hit the note correctly.
James does have a vast range but he needs to learn how to harness it and control it. He also needs to never do another song Adam Lambert did on the show. Kid do not set yourself up for direct comparisions. You will loose that battle. Showcase yourself and no more Adam mentions or covering songs Adam sang. You can't win a head to head vs Adam Lambert.
That said you can go far if you control those pipes and sing some G&R, Aerosmith (NOTCRYIN) Scorpions, yep.
Stop the fight right now.! I am a huge glambert fan, and one thing we are known for is being intelligent, fair and caring people (most of us) At first, I was like no he's tryin to be Adam, but you know what i wish him the best I really do because no matter what the outcome is he will never be Adam. Adam is a global superstar and is just getting bigger and bigger all the time. My only hope is that all the adam haters don't put this james kid through just for spite (immature) If he's truly the best I hope america finally gets it right, I've been watching for 10 yrs now and america only really got it right 3 times. Give the kid a chance but I know I will trully never really follow anyone but Adam! It's not that important we have our world wide star!
I think James has a good voice and he's a nice kid and deserves a shot but he should stay away from singing songs that Adam Lambert sang. Nobody will ever compare to Lambert's voice---he broke the mold. James should find other songs that match his own vocal abilities.
How can you call him the "Second Coming of Adam Lambert" when Adam hasn't left yet? And he won't be going away any time soon. I swear that AI is letting him through just so us Glamberts get pissed off and start watching and voting (against James) again.
That was God awful! He screeched through the whole song. Sam Cooke must be turning over in his grave. There was no emotion to it, no nuances, just yelling.
I love all the butthurt glamberts who praised there "RockGod" for being 1 of a kind. Not 2 years later a clone is born lawl. There similiar voices can co exist cuz james doesnt strike me as having any desire to be a tecno pop singer like Adam.
For the clowns who r in denial that they are even remotely the same, seek help now. Lot of the same facial expressions, moves, certain angles james looks like a twin brother. I guess all the haters are still holding out hope Adam will wanna touch their va jay jay someday.
Oh.... I just watched his performance and I fell bad for him. He is trying to live up to their expectations that he be Adam and he cannot. I think he should have waited to audition. If he had more training and experience I think he might have been able to do better. Poor thing.
James is amazing! He's got my vote. He's cute, sweet and yawn, I'm getting board of the "screamer" comments.
yes Rickey just like Adam Lambert... ooh wait except for:
1. Adam had style and class.... no sob story
2. Adam can actually sing words not just scream
3. Adam was GORGEOUS
4. Adam changed up songs and styles... he can ACTUALLY show control
5. Adam made ppl watch Idol.. just to see what he'll do.. even VFTW ;)
p.s. no.... im not a glambert..
I c what you doing here Nigel, i c ....but seriously he shouldn't exploit him like that with all those issues of his. If he was just some d-bag with zero self-awarness, sure let's have fun with him, but he's is legit ill.
Better song-choices is what I hope for this guy, also some of the in-house mentors telling him to rein it in a little bit. From what I hear of his speaking voice, I believe he's not even a tenor, he's a highish baritone with extremely effective upper-register vocal technique, which means he can go lower than Lambert and go for the money notes when it matters, instead of the entire time. It *will* get tiresome, unless he decides to go for old-school Zep-rock, or some 80's glam metal, or Chris Cornell's stuff - and that may get tiresome as well.
I hope they know what to do with him, cause this show definitely needs a regular contingent of rockers (and you just can't have rock without the money notes :))
LOL at all the "glamberts" getting all defensive. "Oh no no, Adam is WAAAY better than this guy and if you don't agree you need your ears cleaned and your head checked", "there's no way you can compare the two, Adam has way more control over his screams and screetches". Please. You might find this guy annoying, but that's how non-fans of Lambert feel. An ear piercing scream sounds exactly the same whether it comes from a guy named Lambert with years of "experience" who used Idol as his last shot at fame, or from a guy named James who is socially awkward and just trying to make a better life for his little family. I honestly don't hear much of a difference between either of these guys, but I think James doesn't come across as fake and insincere and conceited like Lambert does.
LOL. Rickey, what a sense of humor you have! You're dripping with sarcasm tonight! Anybody comparing the two by going back & forth listening to this performance by James Durbin and Adam's on YT (AI season 8 finale) can immediately tell that Adam's is soulful, controlled, masterful, simply exquisite. James can sure belt out the notes and chug through any song like a powerful locomotive but obviously displays no innate sense of musicality. While he's got talent and potential, he'll need lots of coaching and no small measure of discipline if he is going to make it to the later rounds.
My problem is with the song choice and similar arrangement of A Change is Gonna Come that Adam performed at the finale. James Durbin will get compared to Lambert, naturally because of the vocal range but it doesn't help that out of all songs, he chose that one
I know I will get dissed, but I was such a non Adam fan. I thought HE screamed all the time and he sounded great except for the overdoing it on the wailing, etc, etc. So, when James came along I was a bit critical at first. But there is much to be said for those who don't walk in the shoes of someone with Autism, much less Tourette's. Many Aspie people would never even consider auditioning. Did anyone ever think this kid is finding his own way and Adam may have inspired him? After all, Adam was different, quirky and almost didnt make it into the top 24 himself. Did anyone ever think that nerves may have something to do with this "screaming" and "overdoing it" which, in my opinion, is not as annoying as Adam's (again my opinion)? Aren't we all a bit critical when it has been proven over the course of the show that some we think are just awful at the beginning turn out to be the ones everyone roots for?
I have a child with autism, and know children with Tourettes. That kid has got some great control over the ticks and I believe that with time he will prove to get better, more comfortable and ease into his own character.
And as my daughter said, who is totally in love with Adam Lambert, Adam is Adam and James is James, and they each have their own individuality. I don't think James is imitating or trying to be like Adam. I think WE are doing the comparisons and that is not fair to either one of them. Let them be their own individuals!
Ugh. My ears are bleeding. Could he SCREAM any more??? No, I don't think so... but I'm sure he will. So unhappy that he took the spot of someone way more deserving...
Come on guys don't be sooooo mean!!! Obviously he's no Adam but he's trying his best to sing!!!! Show him some love!!! I am a Glambert but I hate it when ppl start to diss others just because they think Adam is the best in the world!!
He kinda has that understated rebellious, bad boy vibe hidden by a cute little smile haha... I like him. If he can learn to control his voice and pick better songs, I think he can be amazing. He has the goods
I too think that James overdoes the screaming bit. He's got a real fine singing voice outside of the screaming and there's a way of showcasing his vocal range without overdoing it. He needs proper training to utilize his voice properly then he can be awesome. As it is, I still think Colton would have been a better choice.
He's cute. But he ruined this song. I'm all for screaming but you got to pick for the right songs for that, this certainly wasn't one of them. As for the Adam Lambert stuff... I don't think he's trying to copy. It just so happens they can both scream (in slightly different ways). Nothing else he has done seemed copycattish(is this a word? ha) to me.
I don't know why a lot of people were against James Durbin. I agree Rickey seems to overrate James Durbin but James has the talent and I think he deserve his spot in the Top 24. I suggest we should suspend our biases and just stop comparing James and Adam because there's nothing to compare. Adam is a great artist and James also has the talent. Both their voice sounds good although James lacks the control of his vocals. Let's give James Durbin a chance to show us who he is as an artist and not a copycat.
Lina are you on heavy duty psychotropic drugs, because I cannot imagine any other way that that round of screaming trash could sound good to anyone in the 'human family', and all of you people that agree with me, and it appears there are many Lina. Take consolation because screamer boy isn't going to be around long. Thank Goodness for that, I well may have to mute the TV when he stands up.
Storm, actually Adam doesn't Scream at all. I've been reading so many articles and listening to interviews that explain Adam's vocal abilities. Adam goes from lower to high register with ease & effortlessly. I think best way to understand this is to listen to both versions James and Adam's to hear the difference. Many other singers have tried to sing this song and just can't without sounding painful to listen to. Also have you listened to some other singers do "Feelin Good." Many great artists have tried. Adam's version on AI was Matt Bellemy's and honestly Adam sounded much better. But I love Matt and Muse. I try to be impartial when comparing Adam to others and so far think I have been. Adam has such a rare gift and we only find someone of Adam's caliber once in a lifetime. I've lived over 50 yrs and have never heard or seen anyone that can sing like Adam.
Honestly, i stopped reading after 1st sentence. I will just assume the rest was as big a farce as 1st line.
The Glamberts couldnt even out vote a bunch of folks in arkansas-Side note id be very worried about Scotty McCreery ruinin this season with a Kris Allen like mass town vote
Clone? Not even close! I can see him trying to channel Adam, but that's where the similarity ends. James should just sing and be himself and I think he could go far. Adam did his infamous wail in each song once or twice, and it sounded like music with an actual note and tone. The rest was just his pure vocals. James screamed excessively during his number and it sounded like screams, no tone, no musicality, no nothing, just high pitched screaming. Huge difference!
Adam Lambert and James Durbin are nothing alike, not in singing, not in performing, and not in looks. The people that are putting down the Lambert fans are not being realistic. Go back and compare Adam's performance of the same song and there is definitely a big difference. Even if you like James better you should be able to admit they are nothing alike.
Actually when Adam wailed, there was an actual note and musical sound, James' wails sound more like actual screams. I will wait to see what JD does during the competition before I rule him out.
LOL. A comment like that pretty much assures all of us you're a glambert.
The fact that many of the glamberts are getting all butt burned by the comparison of their glamgod to this guy is enough to make me certain that this guy is going to give Lambert a run for his money.
Vive la Durbin, the new scream king!
You are so right Bev.... oh and you forgot to mention that he comes across as straight so we should afford him all the courtesy in the world.
Here's the thing, it doesn't matter what glamberts think of him or what other idoltards that can't stand glambert think of him.
This kid was not put through based on his talent, Nigel is using him to get more buzz for his show (because he's kinda polarizing, acts like a d-bag since Hollywood, is having meltdowns on regular basis and has no control over his voice = he's basicaly every reality show's producer wet dream) and that's perfectly ok, because James signed up for this, BUT Nigel knows his health conditions and family situation, so at this point he should have told him to get a job, so he can take care of his kid. He's not gonna make it in this competition with his personality and the producers know it, yet they've put him through. Go figure.
Greenlee, How is anybody trying to be halfway objective to respect your defensive remark when it's obvious you didn't do the performance comparisons first? Or did you, and you just lost it? Even in his finest performance on AI to date (the Judas Priest piece)--and it was a fantastic, inspired performance--James failed to exercise control and overreached at the very end (hence, Steven Tyler's somewhat ambivalent praise in the outset). James can and, if the viewing audience is fair, will do well but he's not in the same league as Adam Lambert.
I agree JJ. You cannot sing a song another idol performed and not expect to be compared to the original version. I am an Adam fan but was willing to give him a chance but his version pales by comparison. That is the risk you take when you try to walk in a previous idol's foot steps. Unless you are going to do it in a completely different way or you think you are better than the original it is not a good idea. He failed to impress me by neither changing it up or surpassing the original. I would have been happier had his spot went to somebody different that might have surprised us. That said... how boring is this season? I thought last season was boring but this is a yawn fest!
Adam doesn't scream. He's been acknowledge by the greatest classical singers of our time. Adam is a counter tenor who can sing high notes without going into falseto. He doesn't need to he can go from low register to high effortlessly.
As far as judges are concerned they have been hired to save the show so they are overrating some of these contestants to keep viewers interested. James has talent but needs more control. I wish him well.
