Independent Spirit Awards 2016 Nominations: ‘Carol’, ‘Spotlight’, ‘It Follows’, More (VIDEO)

The nominees are in for the Independent Spirit Awards 2016, honoring the best in independent films for the year. The nominees were announced earlier today by Avengers: Age of Ultron star Elizabeth Olsen and Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega. The 31st annual ceremony is due to air exclusively on IFC on Feb. 27, the night before the 88th Academy Awards.

Carol, the new period drama from Todd Haynes starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, led the pack with six nominations, including Best Feature and dual best actress nominations for Blanchett and Mara. Also among the big vote-getters were Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation and Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight, both of which were nominated for Best Feature, earning five nods apiece. While the Academy doesn’t always load up its nominations with independent features, this is a stronger year than most for indie films. Hell, even critically-acclaimed horror film It Follows made the cut! This has been an awesome year so far for cinema, so I wouldn’t be surprised if many of these movies went on to Oscar gold, particularly Carol and Spotlight. Either way, the Oscar race is in full swing!
