Michael Slezak, TVLine.com’s resident American Idol expert, returns with Season 6 standout Melinda Doolittle for an all-new Idology.

This week, Michael and Melinda address whether this will be remembered as the season that had to cheat to get a female winner by stacking the deck in the ladies’ favor. In addition, the hosts discuss the transcendent performances of Candice Glover and Kree Harrison, and question if any of the other remaining girls can spoil a Candice/Kree finale.

Thoughts:

While I agree wholeheartedly with the reality that women have often gotten short shrift on Idol ever since season 6, I feel it’s pretty indisputable that this season had the weakest male lineup in the history of the show, in terms of viable potential winners. And I don’t think anyone can convince me that this wasn’t a purposeful choice on the part of The Powers That Be. Yes, we absolutely got the right result with this top 5. And who knows? Maybe we’d have still gotten this top 5 even if they’d put, say, Josh Holiday through to America’s vote. But I do think that this will ultimately prove to be a bit of a hollow victory for the ladies, as the attempts to manufacture a female winner have been so embarrassingly transparent that it’s undermining what has been an unquestionably stellar season for the women, with performers like Kree Harrison and Candice Glover bringing the goods every week.

With that said, I still don’t get the Amber love, and I’ve given up on the idea that I ever will. Yet I get the feeling that the pimping could get her to top 3, just through sheer force of will. This has been something of an unprecedented season already, with three of the top 5 having previously auditioned for the show (Janelle and Candice are three-peats, and Amber was cut in Vegas last year). Every Idol winner was someone who won on their first try, yet that streak could come to an end this year. That, in and of itself, is kind of fascinating to me.

So what do you think? Would we have still gotten this final 5 with a stronger male lineup? Is this the season that had to cheat to get a female winner? Can anyone spoil the Kree/Candice finale? Sound off in the comments!
