‘Idology': A Hollow Victory for Season 12’s Women?
This week, Michael and Melinda address whether this will be remembered as the season that had to cheat to get a female winner by stacking the deck in the ladies’ favor. In addition, the hosts discuss the transcendent performances of Candice Glover and Kree Harrison, and question if any of the other remaining girls can spoil a Candice/Kree finale.

While I agree wholeheartedly with the reality that women have often gotten short shrift on Idol ever since season 6, I feel it’s pretty indisputable that this season had the weakest male lineup in the history of the show, in terms of viable potential winners. And I don’t think anyone can convince me that this wasn’t a purposeful choice on the part of The Powers That Be. Yes, we absolutely got the right result with this top 5. And who knows? Maybe we’d have still gotten this top 5 even if they’d put, say, Josh Holiday through to America’s vote. But I do think that this will ultimately prove to be a bit of a hollow victory for the ladies, as the attempts to manufacture a female winner have been so embarrassingly transparent that it’s undermining what has been an unquestionably stellar season for the women, with performers like Kree Harrison and Candice Glover bringing the goods every week.
With that said, I still don’t get the Amber love, and I’ve given up on the idea that I ever will. Yet I get the feeling that the pimping could get her to top 3, just through sheer force of will. This has been something of an unprecedented season already, with three of the top 5 having previously auditioned for the show (Janelle and Candice are three-peats, and Amber was cut in Vegas last year). Every Idol winner was someone who won on their first try, yet that streak could come to an end this year. That, in and of itself, is kind of fascinating to me.
So what do you think? Would we have still gotten this final 5 with a stronger male lineup? Is this the season that had to cheat to get a female winner? Can anyone spoil the Kree/Candice finale? Sound off in the comments!

THANK YOU! Creativity does not mean a dude with a guitar. Michael and Melinda are giving me life in this episode.
I've got to agree with there argument about the deck not being favorable to women in recent years which is why I'm not irate at all about the fact that the top 5 are girls and not a WGWG.
I don't think this is the worst male line up in AI history. Season 1 and 3 were pretty awful. But okay that was ages ago when it was still considered cheesy for guys to try out for AI. Two rockers, Bo and Constantine, in Season 4 broke that mold.
But even so, the male winners or frontrunners since then have been more about being an overall packaged artist or entertainer rather than pure singers, with Archuleta the only exception. (Joshua Ledet was amazing, but he was never considered a frontrunner).
AI is manipulated every single year. They cast the show like they would cast a Real World reality TV show. Why else would you have a Sanjaya or Lazaro in the mix? Sometimes their manipulation works and sometimes it backfires the producers. So to fault AI of being manipulative is like complaining that McDonald is too greasy. We're just mad that their manipulation works in their favor as opposed to backfiring.
Personally, I don't care if we have the best top 10, top 5 or top 3. As long as we have the most deserving winner, I'm okay. So it's better be Candice or else...
I have been a loyal AI fan since season two. It has been the center of my long Winter nights of TV viewing, I am trying to hang on but must admit, failing. I am just not interested in who wins this season. I love Kree and Candice's voices but they lack the "IT" factor for me. Janelle is the lone personality left, IMO. I will never understand what Idol has against the two previous MALE winner.s Seems to me that MCCreery and Phillips have done Idol proud. I have started watching The Voice and find their judges to be far more entertaining.

Oh Amber. Oh honey, no.
Well what'd you expect? I don't really care about song choices that much but I do think Candice's choice for year you were born is interesting than the rest.
I'm with you on everything you just said. But I do feel like most of the winners we've had in the past seasons have not been deserving. Every year there is always that contestant that I feel like would've been better for the win especially last season. There was nothing special or unique about Phillip what so ever, same goes to Lee and Kris Allen. I really hope that Candice does win this show as well. And I do think she may have a successful career after the shows over.
