Fortune on Thursday released its list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2013, and some of the results are surprising. While it’s not exactly shocking to see Google in first place, Microsoft is all the way down in 75th place, while Apple and Facebook didn’t even make the cut.

We’re mainly interesting in tech companies; here’s a condensed list with some notables names:

  • 1: Google
  • 2: SAS
  • 11: Qualcomm
  • 19: Salesforce.com
  • 22: Intuit
  • 34: Rackspace Hosting
  • 42: Cisco
  • 63: Cisco
  • 68: Intel
  • 75: Microsoft

If you were counting, that’s 10 companies out of 100, which is not bad for the technology world. If you’ve studied to be an engineer or a computer scientist, you have something to look forward to.

Fortune’s list is quite different from the one LinkedIn released just a few months ago. On that one, four out of the top five companies to work were in the technology sector: Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook.

Then again, LinkedIn is a social network and thus its members tend to be slightly more technology-savvy than the average, meaning they are more interested in such companies. Fortune’s list is meanwhile made up of “the top workplaces in corporate America.”

Here’s what the publication had to say about putting Google in first place:

What makes it so great?

The Internet juggernaut takes the Best Companies crown for the fourth time, and not just for the 100,000 hours of free massages it doled out in 2012. New this year are three wellness centers and a seven-acre sports complex, which includes a roller hockey rink; courts for basketball, bocce, and shuffle ball; and horseshoe pits.

In other words, Fortune is all about how great the workplace is, based on what it provides, while LinkedIn is all about crunching numbers to figure out where Americans are looking to work. Either way, it looks like Google is the place to be. Unless, of course, you’re asking the employers, in which case the answer is Facebook.

Hmm, that's surprising to me. I thought Apple would at least make the cut.
