FOX Announces 2015 Fall Schedule, Supersized ‘Empire’ Season 2, More

FOX has announced its schedule for Fall 2015 at Upfronts today, and the big takeaway is that Empire and Gotham will be key to the network’s success.

To the surprise of no one, Empire Season 2 is not being held for midseason. Instead, it will premiere in the fall with a supersized order of 18 episodes for the second season. The series will remain on Wednesdays, where it will share schedule space with brand new procedural drama Rosewood. FOX is hoping that Empire will be able to rub off on Rosewood and give the series a boost, leave FOX with two hits on Wednesday night. On the one hand, it might have made more sense to use Empire as a lead-in for Rosewood, but that would require messing with a proven success in the 9:00 PM time slot, so I can see why FOX isn’t moving it.

FOX is also keeping Gotham where it is, as the hit series will return in its Monday 8:00 PM time slot. Unlike Empire, Gotham actually will serve as a lead-in for a new show, in this case the TV adaptation of the 2002 blockbuster Minority Report. Internally, FOX is reportedly excited about the show, and the Monday 9:00 PM time slot is a pretty big vote of confidence.

“Building on the phenomenal momentum created by Gotham, The Last Man on Earth and, of course, Empire, we’re infusing next season’s schedule with new ambitious dramas; smart comedies; aspirational, unscripted series and big live events and specials – all from the best creators in the business,” said Dana Walden and Gary News, the new chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group. “And our strategy with these bold creative swings is simple: schedule them strategically, market them relentlessly and create events that break through and captivate viewers across every platform.”

Other big news: American Idol has been renewed for a fifteenth and final season, although that will not premiere until midseason. Also premiering at midseason: The X-Files revival and musical Grease: Live, the latter of which will premiere on January 31. Both shows will likely get an added boost from the NFC Championship Game, which FOX is getting this year on January 24. Football has a way of boosting a network’s overall numbers, so this is big news for FOX.

But the schedule will see changes long before midseason: Sleepy Hollow moves to Thursdays, airing after Bones, while New Girl is being held for midseason, allowing the network to free up Tuesday nights for freshman comedies Grandfathered and The Grinders, and Ryan Murphy’s new hour-long, Scream Queens.
