Former ‘Superman’ Dean Cain and former ‘Supergirl Helen Slater Join ‘Supergirl’ Series

The upcoming Supergirl series from CBS will feature two familiar faces in the DC mythos.

Dean Cain, who played Superman in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman on ABC back in the 1990s, has joined the upcoming CBS series. Also joining him is Helen Slater, who played Supergirl in the 1984 film of the same name. While the nature of their roles has not been confirmed, it’s kind of awesome that they’re appearing in the series, even if it’s unlikely that they’ll reprise their respective roles. I mean, in Slater’s case, it’s pretty much impossible for her to be Supergirl, since…well, she’s not going to be Supergirl in this. That part belongs to Glee‘s Melissa Benoist, who will play the role of Kara Zor-El, a Kryptonian who adopts the identity of Linda Danvers upon arriving on Earth.

CBS is eyeing the series for a spot on its 2015-2016 broadcast calendar, and considering the renaissance of superhero series on TV, between Arrow, The Flash, and Gotham, along with the upcoming Teen Titans series on TNT, it’s looking like this has a better shot than most at being a hit.

But what do you think? Is it the right call to bring in Cain and Slater, or is it a throwback with no upside? Sound off in the comments!
