This is a portion of my interview with Sanjaya Malakar last night after his birthday concert at B.B. Kings in Times Square. I broke the news to him that Ellen DeGeneres was replacing Paula Abdul, and his reaction was amazing.

Ha, great interview, Rickey!! You can always count on Sanjaya for a genuine response. Of course he loves Ellen. She will be a fabulous judge. I might actually watch this season. Okay, so I didn’t expect this to be the first item on his BB King show. More to come??

Here's my take on Ellen being a judge: If you've ever seen her talk about idol on her show, you know that she watches it very carefully and is very articulate about her opinions on why she likes certain people. I agree that she was pretty useless judging SYTYCD, but I feel like she was just having fun, since it was a one time thing, and that she'll take the idol job more seriously. And no matter what, she is just a joy to watch.

I think she is capable of being a good judge, she has the vocab for it, she knows her sh*t. It is just a matter of her not being too nice to people when they fail. I think that will be her downfall if she has one.

Having a professional background in music does not make you a good judge. Look at Randy Jackson.
