Demi Lovato is Anti-Bullying Ambassador for Secret’s ‘Mean Stinks’
Demi Lovato is the new ambassador for Secret’s anti-bullying campaign “Mean Stinks.” The X Factor judge, who has been a victim of bullying herself, will be the public face for a campaign which will encourage girls to “gang up for good.” Love the cause and the name of the campaign. Keep up the good work Demi!
Demi has been very open about her past struggles with bullying and the subject even came up during Jillian Jensen’s emotional The X Factor audition. The teen singer confessed that she was “severely bullied” in school and felt a kinship with Lovato and even shared the same “stay strong” tattoo. Demi was in tears during the audition and even gave Jillian a hug when she finished singing.
Demi told People magazine, “I had a really tough time when I was in middle school. People would write ‘hate petitions’ [about me] and send them around to be signed. They’d have CD-bashing parties of my demos. They’d come to my house, stand across the street and yell things. It was a very emotional time for me, and all I wanted to do was get away.”
Now, Demi is using her personal struggles with bullying to try and encourage young girls to “pledge to have a drama free year.” A pledge that she is asking girls to symbolize by painting the nail of their pinky fingers blue, symbolizing a “pinky promise that I’m not going to bully people, that me and my friends are ganging up for good.”
To help, Secret will donate $1 (up to $150,000) from the purchase of every Mean Stinks Clinical Strength deodorant to the cause. You can learn more about the program on Secret’s Facebook page.
