Crystal Bowersox – Hand in My Pocket – Video MP3 Top 24 American Idol Performance
Crystal Bowersox sings “Hand in My Pocket” by Alanis Morissette on the American Idol 9 Top 24
Ellen DeGeneres: I’m a fan of yours. We are lucky you decided to audition.
Kara DioGuardi: You have greatness in you.
Randy Jackson: I love the honesty.
Simon Cowell: There are thousands of you doing the same thing in subway stations. You are doing a sound-a-like. I think you are refreshing.
I’m so impressed! Harmonica for the win.

Got Something to Add?
If there's one like this girl at every subway station then LEAD ME TO THE NEXT DOWNRAMP!!!
Crystal is fantastic. When you compare the natural richness of her voice with the others, there is NO comparison. There are some other good girls in the competition (Lilly, Siobhan, Katelyn, Paige & maybe DiDi) and a couple of good guys (Alex & Lee) but no one's voice even approaches Crystal's. BTW, her sound is relevant to music from ANY decade 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's or 10's!
I thought she did ok. She's definitely talented, but I was expecting more than just another sound-a-like performance. I wanna hear more from her. Also, there's something I don't like about her personality. I think I do get that vibe that she doesn't care.
Accusing someone with perception of being a child is actually pretty immature. I'm sorry you can't see what's right in front of your face, but she is obviously giving off the vibe that she doesn't care... The judges have also picked up on that vibe and commented on it in the Hollywood round.
Also, she is clearly using her child as her sob story, by bringing it up regularly... again, commented on by Simon when he says "we all love your baby". Quit acting like your stupid shit opinions are any better than my stupid shit opinions... It makes you look like... well, like a stupid shit.
I got chills...but I must admit that I also got chills from Haeley Vaughn's performance. I like both these gals (Crystal and Haeley) a lot. By the way, I MISS PAULA!
Bowersox is the most talented girl, but this wasn't my favorite performance, and I agreed with SIMON. She needs to do something different, otherwise she will appear to be just like any ordinary NYC singer. I used to live in NYC and Simon is absolutely right!
Thanks so much, Rickey, for posting these mp3 files for d/l .. you are amazing!
So generous to do this each season ;)
I absolutely love Crystal Bowersox... she and Andrew Garcia have been my top 2 picks since the auditions..
I'm a huge fan of guitar & harp w/the brace.. so cool..
Really like Lilly, Siobhan, Paige & Didi too.. hoping they all get through.. Looking fwd to the guys tonite...
P.S. Glad Ellen is on board as a judge, and expecting her to get more sophisticated in her comments as the weeks go by...
(i'm starting to visualize another crazed 'buscast' from Oakland like we did last July- how much fun would that be?!)
I thought she was Awesome last night!!! She is my second favorite girl on the show this year!!! I voted for her last night!!!
For me the harmonica wasn't necessary. I'm not on the hype train but I want to hear more. She seems like she has more to offer than we saw tonight.
I hope she got Simon's point that she doesn't need to do alike performers but should do different types but in that singer-songwriter style she has.
I'm hating on this bitch now. Using having a son as her sob story, yet having this "I don't even give a shit that I'm here" attitude.
She also said she's only there for her son... not because she wants to sing... not because her dream is to sing. Yet, if she were to find success from it, she'll have no time for her son.
Her dumb bitch pompous attitude puts me off before she even starts to sing. Then when she does sing, I'm underwhelmed, and she is very folky.
A very mediocre coffeehouse singer won last year.
I'm guessing a coffeehouse singer that can actually sing might do very well this year.
I really don't get the love for her! I think Simon's and Kara's point was right on....there are thousands of singers like Crystal in every coffee shop in every major city across the country. Finding an indie, dreadlock, guitar playing songstress is a dime a dozen. So I don't get why people want to act as if she is exceptional. I am not saying she sucks but she is not better than any girl in the competition and I think she is behind Siobhan and Lily who I both think could sing circles around her.
Worst of all her song choice was as predictable, obvious and safe as Michelle doing "Fallen" and Ashley singing Leona Lewis.
I really like her, but I don't think she came out with the impact she could of... can't wait to see what she does next week!
For her first performance, not only was it a good vocal, but she played both the guitar and harmonica...and well. Definitely a highlight this evening.
I think that Crytal hit it, but I still want to hear more from Lily, Di Di, and Katie. I believe that these girls are very good and do not need American Idol to be Great Singers, they already are, but I also very much enjoyed the performances done by Haeley and Michelle. I hope my six picks make the cut. I realy enjoyed all of them, however, When Crytal brought out her harmonica, I cried, I felt it, she's got it, I see her becoming a very special and possibly big famous singer, song writer and musician she has the whole package..
If it was subway singing, let me tell you this --- no one would notice Melissa Etheridge, Alanis Morisette or Joan Osbourne if they were singing in the subway either. That's just the reality.
Rickey, my friend,
Thank you again for posting all of these wonderful articles. You are great part of my American Idol "experience".
So you know, your link and Flash gadget for Crystal's song is dead/ inop.
Crystal was my fav of the night. I agree that the Alanis Morrissette was not the most versatily(sp?) vocal song she could've chosen, but still felt very 'real'. Also liked Michelle, Didi, & Siobhan. Maybe Katelyn and Lily, not 100% sold on them yet.
I have never liked someone so much this early in the season.
Crystal, to me, is the only authentically good singer I've seen on this show in a long time.
I didn't like her song choice but this chick is great. If she's telling the truth about not watching this show in the past, I like her even more!
Is the mp3 download thing messed up? It won't play.
I think Crystal might win this season. Her, Andrew, Lilly, DiDi or Siobhan. I love Crystal's blunt honesty.
Yeah, looks like she's had her teeth cleaned. Whatever.
I thought the performance was ok. It was interesting and different.
I also liked her honesty during her interview. None of this sob story BS, and told the truth on why she's there. No frills, no crap. Love it.
this girl is so real... im loving her performances.. hope she makes it far...
where's michelle delamor's post? D:
She was definitely better than most of the girls tonight. I'd rank her in the top 4 performances, right up there with Siobhan, Lilly, and Michelle.
First off, don’t call Crystal a “bitch”. You don’t know her and she is the FARTHEST thing from a “bitch”
2nd: Music is Crystal’s LIFE! That is her biggest dream, her truest passion. If she didn’t want it, she wouldn’t have gone on the show. She gives a shit. Performing is ALL that girl does. And she busts ass to do it. That IS her JOB. And she is not “pompous” she has that “attitude” because she never expected to get this far. It’s obvious she’s not as mainstream as a typical idol contestant and she knows it. She’s being standoffish and its getting misconstrued as “attitude”
3rd: She IS there for her son AND her dream. It’s not like she has control over what the producers decide to air on TV. They’re the ones who make it look like she keeps talking about her son all the time. Its not a sob story its the truth. If she wanted to give a sob story she could have just explained her whole life on idol. But Crystal is not the type to give a “sob story” to get ahead. Doing what she loves (which is performing/writing) is not providing as well as she would like for her and the person she loves most. Her son.
So get a clue Matt and look at the bigger picture. Idol only shows what they want you to see. And you’re one of the few who obviously can’t see past it.
High fives to all those “Mamasox” fans.

Matt, you win the prize for being the most clueless person to ever post here.
I'm guessing you're under 14 years old.
I don't recall ever hearing Crystal say she didn't want to sing. I saw determination to provide for her child.
You're an idiot.
She wasn't using anything as a sob story unlike a lot of the other contestants.
She mentioned that she had a son and wanted to give him everything.
So would you rather her go out there and act completely fake?
She told it like it was. She said exactly why she was there and didn't try to sugarcoat it like everyone else does.
If you ever heard her sing outside of "Idol" you would change your mind. She's in a different environment and definately has not come out of her shell yet.
I love how Simon called out the other judges who labeled her "original". I don't hang out in coffee shops or clubs, but I personally know 4 women (acquaintances of mine) who are on par musically with Crystal. She's not bad by any means, but she's just not as good or original as some might think. I put her in the same category as Jason Castro. Another one of Simon's comments rang true with regards to Castro. I think he said something to the effect of "there is one of you on every college campus in America." The same goes for Crystal Bowersox.
