Colorado Court: 15 Year-old Girls Can Marry
I am absolutely stunned by this ruling. This country is full of ironies. Oh yeah, I’m a 15 year old girl and I can marry my 40 year old boyfriend if I want to, heck I can even marry my 14 year old boyfriend. But if I was a 30 year old lesbian marrying my 26 year old girlfriend, I would destroy marriage as we know it. This just sucks. So those teenagers in Colorado can get married, have sex and have children legally under common law — but they are not allowed by the United States to drink Coors Light. Jesus, take the wheel!

Got Something to Add?
these people are unreasonable. have they thought about the financial implication this stupid situation would cause? the emotional and psychological effect of robbing these kids of their teenagehood? trying to shackle the lives of young 'uns with responsibilities?
what world do they come from?!
please throw them out of america!
"(the common law being recognized as the result of some very old English law)."
The daftest thing being it's not a law that we even recognise in the U.K. Thank goodness.
Yet we do finally allow civil partnerships between gay people. I bet that's one law they won't be taking off us in the near future.
15 is far too young to make such a commitment. Hands up everyone who thought they were madly in love at 15. Hands up again everyone who's still with that person 15 years later.....
Kids need to be kids, NOT worrying about marriage and children.
I completely agree.
Until we get off our butts and vote as much as we do for So You Think You Can Dance and American Idol, the morons will continue to rule the country!

Marriage totally sucks! Stay single people of the world!
Oh and did I forget to mention Bush is an asshat?
The US government is really going nuts rights now, it seems. I'm currently 15 years old right now, and while I do like a couple of guys, I don't fancy this law at all. Nor will most of my peers, I think, since many of us know that none of us are ready for marriage right now. Or anytime soon, for that matter. When I'm speaking of "us", of course, I'm excluding the homecoming queens who are constantly in danger of having to get married due to extramarital pregnancies.
More power to you Rickey!
Shay -- it's actually legal marriage for 15 yr olds and common law marriage for 12 yr old girls and 14 yr old boys (the common law being recognized as the result of some very old English law). I guess they didn't want the under 15s to feel left out so they told them it's okay to live together as husband and wife until the age of 15 when they can have that commitment on paper. It's also worth mentioning that the same article stated there are several states which don't have a minimum age for people to get married. So, in utter ridiculousness, a girl toddler and a boy toddler can be married off to one another, but two adults of the same gender cannot. It is more important to block gay people from getting married than to protect children from getting married off by unscrupulous adults??? I guess if underage marriage were a political hot topic right now then these states would be in a huge hurry to pass a law setting the minimum age for marriage.
Count me as another Christian who agrees with Rickey on this one.
I've always understood marriage to be a solemn commitment made between two consenting adults in the sight of God. When the government tells two consenting adults that they're not able to get married, that's crossing the line. The government is not God, and I'm sick of it trying to be, and I'm sick of some of my fellow Christians treating government as a Deity. Stop with the idolatry! Government should not be worshipped, and no one should ever forget that there is a distinction between the God's law (moral law) and man's law. Meh.
I shall end this brief rant with the pronouncement that I am happy to be a "small-l" libertarian and the suggestion that you give 1-800-ELECT-US a call if you want to know more about replacing overly-connected career politicians with legitimate *representatives* and *public servants*.
Great post, Rickey (and to those responding).
I hadn't heard about this law, but what the hell were they thinking (or were they)?
But the big difference between kids marrying and gays marrying is that 1) it cuts down on premarital sex in teens, so Colorado will be able to brag about their national average and, 2) when these kids have kids, they'll be able to raise them right and make sure they turn out normal. A gay couple who have kids will undoubtedly teach these kids to be gay and, therefore, not "normal."
And, yes, I have my tongue firmly in my cheek with those last comments. I completely agree with how absurd the law is and agree with Rickey's comments/opinion.
I live in Colorado and we are pissed about this. The last thing these dumb ass kids out here need is the right to get married.
crazy. i'm about to reach twice that age and i'm still single. these kids are still finding themselves in high school presumably and now common law marriage is legal on 15 year olds?
Rickey, here's what I truly don't get. If the rapture-waiters and left-behinders really want the end of times to come, don't they want to put marriage equality RIGHT INTO LAW and then they can wait for the Messiah to come back about 24 hours later?
If they really believed what they said they believed, they'd rush to marry gays off themselves. But what this whole controversy does is SCAPEGOAT gay people for all the sins and divorce and disgusting habits of the straight people.
ah, words of wisdom. <3 rickey <3. to quote something wonderful:
"gay marriage killed the dinosaurs.
this is for people who understand the grave risks of gay marriage. Some suggest gay marriage will merely undermine one of our most fundamental societal institutions, causing countless straight couples to get divorced because exclusion of gays was the only thing holding their marriage together.
But we know better. Gay marriage killed the dinosaurs. If we let liberal activist judges in Massachusetts and California set the course, the blood will run in rivers. Mixed with molten lava."
Huh? Who said Christians were behind this? Lol!
Anyways, kids can get married at 18 and they still can't drink beer. I guess the laws don't have to coincide with each other. That's life, kids!
Oh, hey, I totally believe the US knows what it's doing when by "protecting the sanctity of marriage," it's determined that a 12-year old girl and a 14-year old boy are better judges to have a common law marriage than gay people who are 18+. Yeah, people all over the country know that it is much better to encourage the underaged to co-habitate and protect their rights to be recognized as husband and wife because, hey, as long as the marriage is one male, one female, then there's no harm that could possibly come to people who are still legally recognized as children. It's much better to encourage children to engage in heterosexual intimacy while they are still in middle school because it could keep them from committing the sin of homosexuality and threatening the traditional sense of marriage. Unbelievable!
I consider myself to be conservative and a Christian. But I totally agree with you Rickey. This country has no right to wave the "sanctity of marriage" flag when things like this are going on.
jesus take the wheel...priceless...LOL
Love your site Rickey!!! :)
it's laws like this the government should be amending and not waste time trying to ban gay marriage.
