The recap of Bones – Season 8 Episode 10 – “The Diamond in the Rough”:
First off, I just wanted to say that I’m extremely pleased this show is back. This is my absolute favorite show of all time, and this episode just reaffirmed that for me. It’s the way that the scripts are written, and the on-screen chemistry that David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel have… it’s just perfect.
At the top of the episode, Sweets (John Francis Daley) was watching an episode of ‘Paranormal Abnormalities.’ The main character/vlogger of the series found a dead body covered in crystals… so the producers sent the skeletal remains over to the Jeffersonian Institute. The body was not used as prop, nor was it a part of the original script of ‘Paranormal Abnormalities.’ It was just something they had found while filming the show. Brennan (Emily Deschanel) identified the body to be a Caucasian female named Catarina. The team figured out the victim was a dancer because all of the bones in her feet were completely remodeled. Catarina’s dance partner was a man named Kendrick, and their special duo name was “Special K.”
Booth (David Boreanaz) revealed to Sweets that he used to be a dance teacher during college. Brennan had no idea that Booth was a former dance teacher, until Sweets spilled the beans. Then, Sweets asked B+B to go undercover as dance competitors to further investigate the murder of dancer Catarina. When Booth and Brennan entered the dance competition, they used alias names: Buck and Wanda Moosejaw. In seasons prior, they’ve used these aliases for previous projects. I totally fan-girled over their undercover costumes. B+B are just so incredibly cute together.
When “Buck and Wanda” were “practicing” their dance routine, they encountered an overbearing and verbally violent mother. Her daughter, Leslie, was a friend and fellow competitor of Catarina’s. B+B initially thought that the mother had killed Catarina; but in actuality, Leslie’s boyfriend killed Catarina. Her boyfriend wanted Leslie to win the dance competition so badly that he killed Catarina by breaking her neck. The laboratory exams also revealed that someone had poisoned Catarina with lead multiple times. (Leslie confessed to doing so at the end of the episode).
And since Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) is The King of the Lab, he figured out how to remove the crystals/diamonds from the remains. It was very pertinent for the squinterns to remove the crystals in order to solve the murder mystery.
Angela (Michaela Conlin) was tired of seeing all the “ugliness” at work. She was tired of stripping the beauty away from everything because her goal as a child was to bring beauty into the world. As a young girl, she didn’t imagine herself working at a forensic institute. She and Cam (Tamara Taylor) had a long discussion about this, so Cam cut Angela’s hours. Hodgins actually asked Cam to limit Angela’s hours because Angela needed a break from murder investigations, and other forensic mysteries. She wanted to be a true artist again, so she took her son–Michael Vincent–to the DC’s Corcoran Gallery of Art to see paintings designed by John Singer Sargent. Ultimately, Angela’s wish was granted.
Even though B+B caught the killer, Brennan still wanted to audition at the dance competition. So You Think You Can Dance judge Mary Murphy made a cameo in this episode as one of the judges for this particular competition. B+B aren’t great dancers, but they sure as heck are ADORABLE! <3
This show is just perfect to me. I’ll forever be grateful to executive producers Hart Hanson and Stephen Nathan for creating this show.
